A decent source for BE hoops coverage cuts back. One has to wonder whether the sports section is next on the chopping block. Stephen Rogers, editor and publisher of the Syracuse paper, told his staff that “if we simply maintain the status quo, if we continue to do just what we have been doing — no matter how well we do it — The Post-Standard would face extinction in a matter of years. The economic model that has supported The Post-Standard and newspapers around the country is no longer sustainable.”jimromenesko.com/2012/08/28/patriot-news-changes-print-schedule-to-three-days-a-week/

If New Orleans can't have a real daily paper, hard to understand how Syracuse can support one - I pretty much assumed it was there as a way to boost Newhouse grad employment rates. I guess ESPN will really have to pick up the slack for their friends in the frozen North now.
That said, I am not sure how being less current is going to be more successful business model for any news source.

I'm not sure why a paper in a town that doesn't have a Big East team is relevant

Advance Publications has made no secret of this harvesting strategy, begin with the late Ann Arbor News and continuing through New Orleans and Mobile. If you're a reader of any of the newspapers below, expect it to come your way.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer The Republican (Springfield, Massachusetts) The Express-Times (Easton, Pennsylvania) The Times (Trenton, New Jersey) The Jersey Journal (Jersey City, New Jersey) The Oregonian (Portland, Oregon) The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) Staten Island Advance

DFW, Patriot-News in Harrisburg announced today that they are giong three day a week as you predict.
Im not a newspaper reader and Im of the generation that isnt reading newspapers. Im not too concerned about this. Its inevitable. In every industry, once it reaches a certain level of maturity it begins to consolidate. Airlines are a great example (though the government pushes back either way). Eventually enough smaller papers will fold and only the profitable ones will remain.
Warren Buffett lusted after owning a newspaper because it was essentially a monopoly. Each market had one paper and only one paper. Now that monopoly doesnt exist. It is because of the internet, yes. But its also because there is no more physicals walls keeping competing news papers out. Its too easy to get a national paper (USAtoday, Wall Street Journal, NYT, WPost, LAtime, etc) anywhere in this country. Soon these will be the only ones left. And thats ok if they are reporting the news that is important. Local news is also covered by local TV and Radio, and local online portals like Patch.

I'm not sure why a paper in a town that doesn't have a Big East team is relevant Even if they were a Big East team, I still don't know why this would be relevant (Regardless, I've been in Syracuse reading the daily paper for the last month and can attest to the fact that there is nothing going on to write about BUT sports so its doubtful any sports coverage would be cut back. And they have stated they aren't cutting any reporter jobs.)

Why are we supposed to care about Syracuse not having or having a newspaper. The whole point is the ACC just won't hunt up the North Country.
