Okay. So, who cares?
When you hold something for ransom, shouldn't it be something the other person wants?

Funny how this position comes out now. Me thinks they need us more then we need them.

Wow. Kevin Anderson is in way over his head. I really want for us to play MD every year, and this absolutely guarantees that it won't happen while he is the AD. On the bright side, that might not be for too much longer.

Agree completely, mit0313 -- they're desperate for money now across the board (good job on that Randy Edsall hire!) and money/relevance long term in hoops: when ACC swallows up Pitt and SU, MD's twice a year rival will be Pitt -- so bye-bye Duke at home every year and the $$$/buzz that goes with it, and I think the recruiting pressure they'll feel from SU and Pitt will intensify as a northeast kid who for some reason wants to play in the ACC will have a couple pretty good set of new options to the North. In the meantime, other than a small cash infusion from playing these guys, what do we get out of it -- other than throwing a life preserver to a main local recruiting rival? And what do we get that we couldn't get from, say, UVA instead? If I'm Lee Reed, I give the AD at UVA a call and see what we can work out with them in men's hoops and all the other sports if MD actually decides to execute on this idea (or even if not for that matter). For sports other than women's hoops today that MD apparently is trying to use as a hammer here (LAX, soccer -- and goes without saying things like track and baseball), I think UVA will bring as much if not more than MD to the table-- and I don't think UVA is nearly the local recruiting problem if we play them. We played the 'Hoos home and home in 2001-2002, so let's bring that series back and spend a little time every year reminiscing about Patrick v. Ralph . . . That said, I don't think many of us would have a problem if we scheduled MD, of course, but it is by no means a priority in my mind and this sort of strong-arm tactic is bound to backfire completely.

Why does it never get mentioned that when they played in 1993 the University of Maryland was given good portion of USAir Arena. Was it half? Does anybody have the actual numbers?
I was at the game but just in 8th grade.
Also the actual attendance from that game wasn't very good...13,761 out of a possible 18,756.

That UVA idea seems like it could be a lot of fun. Similar institutional profile with regard to academic standards, successful sports, and color of shorts/sundresses that the student body wears in spring. On another quirky scheduling note, why don't we play GW anymore? I'm well versed in the WG kid, the stupid march on the hilltop, and that one season where they had awesome name candidate of the year Pops Mensah-Bonsu. Until Tuesday, GW is the team which we have the most wins against and the most games played against, yet we haven't played them in 30 years. (As an aside, we hold 54-39 records against both GW and Seton Hall according to www.hoyabasketball.com/opponents.htm)

I like this idea. A lot. Me too. Hadnt even thought of it. UVA would like it I imagine for more exposure in NoVa (Tech has way more than UVA). And only Mens soccer is better at UMD (maybe, dont follow too closely). And with the way the ACC is going, UVA is probably on an up swing and UMD a down swing. What I thought initially is that UMD is now in a terrible bargaining position. We dont need UMD for ticket sales so what do they offer. The only thing I could think of: guarantee football games. One game could really help the FB team cover costs in the new Patriot League and you spend nothing on transportation getting there (and I wouldnt be surprised if gtown won a game one day). Im sure there are economic issues that I am not thinking of and it wouldnt be that profitable for gtown. And it would really make any basketball donors happy. Also there is little reason UMD would want that as it wouldnt get anyone to go to the game. But i love the idea of UMD being so desperate to play Gtown in BBall that they would willing to pay Gtown Football to play at Byrd ;D haha

This is kind of a nice development. We should never do it, of course, but I love how pathetic it makes the Twerps look. Screams desperation!

Desperate move from a desperate program. I love the no comment from GU.
Maryland hoops is in a tailspin and it won't get better once Cuse and Pitt arrive in the ACC. They're going to spend a lot of money for mediocre results.

Does anybody know if men's basketball @ Twerp Land is one of the 8 varsity sports that the University of Maryland is looking to cut?
