I really don't think this is an issue, at all. It happens all the time at a lot of schools. I say, as long as they're not hurting anybody, let the kids have their fun.

I can't believe this thread has reached three pages. I agree. Are people's lives so devoid of actual problems that we're now manufacturing issues to discuss? It's not a race thing or any other thing. Fans cheer for the benchwarmers and walk-ons in every sport at every school at every level. Since I matriculated at GU, and as a fan since then, I can think of the following players that received such treatment: Brendan Gaughan, Dean Berry, James Reed, Gharun Hester, Glennard Johnson, Ryan Beal, Trenton Hillier, Kenny Izzo, Byron Jansen and Ryan Dougherty.

Non-issue. And Caprio seems to enjoy it. He's the first bench-warmer I've seen who looks like he actively tries to make a play every time he's in a game. He doesn't go in there and look to wind the clock down. He wants to make the stat sheet. Whether that has anything to do with the fans or not, I have no idea, but from my vantage point, it looks like he enjoys the fans and wants to give everyone a reason to cheer at the end of a blowout game.
Also, I think he's probably our best walk-on in some time (not counting Wallace).

After reading this thread, I've reconsidered my stance on this:
The racists obviously deserved it.

I have completely changed my thought process on this as well.
Right now, I want nothing more than for John Caprio to get 3-4 minutes in the Syracuse game and to receive a huge cheer from all Hoyas in attendance up in Southern Canada.
;D

I don't think its a big deal, but if I was Caprio I probably wouldn't want fans going crazy when I came in the game. Probably does make him feel like a scrub (but hey, he is a walk-on).
I remember Roy's freshman year, fans had a field day just because he was so awkward (Roy, Roy, Roy!!). He was a starter!, so I don't think it really has anything to do with race or simply because you are a walk-on. Like was said before, I think fans like players they can relate to.

If you recall, last year Moses Ayegba got a huge reaction from the crowd when he first came in off the ridiculous NCAA 9 game suspension. Obviously, this was a totally different situation, but it essentially served as fan recognition of a player that they had not previously had a chance to see.
Obviously, Caprio's situation is different, but I think people simply cheer for him because he rarely plays and he's a walk on. I really don't think it's more deep than that. People did the same thing for Ryan Dougherty last year.

She said something about the "check engine" light showing up on your sarcasm detector. You probably should take it into the shop before something serious happens.

As far as "racism," does it make it better if I vigorously boo'ed Nikita on a regular basis?

As far as "racism," does it make it better if I vigorously boo'ed Nikita on a regular basis? Yes on the racism front, but by booing Nikita you're implicitly questioning the coach's decision to put him in the game, and therefore still breaking the rules.

I'm a terrible person.

Our of pure curiosity, do we think Knicks fans chanting "MVP" tonight for Jeremy Lin might just as, or more, racially motivated than Georgetown fans cheering wildly for Caprio?

I am taking full responsibility for Jeremy Lin's emergence as a budding star in the NBA. His good fortune started only after I mentioned him on this thread a few days ago. Coincidence? I think not. I must have good feng shui?
Damn! Messed it up with a racist comment.

Speaking of the KNICKS, is anyone here old enough to remember Harthorne Wingo? He was on the 1973 NY Knicks NBA championship team. Some of his teammates might be a bit more memorable. They included: Willis Reed -- HOF Dave Debusscherre -- HOF Bill Bradley -- HOF Walt "Clyde" Frazier -- HOF Earl "the Pearl" Monroe -- HOF Dick Barnett Phil Jackson -- HOF Jerry Lucas -- HOF Henry Bibby Dean Memminger Coached - Red Holzman -- HOF
Also on that team? Harthorne Wingo (aka Hawthorne Wingo)
The Knicks won a LOT of games that year. At the end of every home game, when the Knicks had a comfortable lead, the entire Garden would start the chant "WINGO WINGO"
Wingo was a very popular Knick, a rookie who was the last man on the bench. When WINGO came in, everyone knew that game was over. Red Auerbach had his cigar, Red Holzman had Wingo. Everyone, including Wingo, loved when he entered the game. Upon retiring from basketball, he opened a successful sporting goods store named, of course, Wingo's
As Casey used to say, "you could look it up!"
Actually, given what Hoyainspirit said about the 3 pages this thread has taken up already, I'd say right about now is the time we should all start chanting: WINGO WINGO WINGO WINGO

Dick Barnett is in the HOF too, a 15 point a game player for 15 seasons. Imagine a team today with eight Hall of Famers on the active roster. Even the Bulls teams of the 1990's won't match that.
