I think that students who know enough about the roster to know who Caprio is know that he is a walk-on. I have no problem with the chanting. As others have said, the "real" players seem to get pretty excited for the guys at the end of the bench. They try to get them shots. And I seem to remember one game in the last couple years in which Wright or Freeman talked JTIII into inserting them, or told them to go check in when coach wasn't looking.
As for the argument about disrespecting the coach? You've been on this forum for years now--you do read what people write here, right? If questioning the coach wasn't allowed, we'd have to censor a lot of what gets yelled at games, and certainly shut down this and every other message board. If JTIII gets his feelings hurt by students encouraging him to insert a walk-on, we have a bigger problem than some punk kids sitting behind the baskets.
But I don't think for a minute that it is completely independent of race, which is a bit bothersome. For my first two years at Georgetown, there were two end-of-the-bench walk-ons: Ryan Beal and Kenny Izzo. At the end of blowouts there would often be calls for Izzo to be inserted, but I don't remember a single one for Beal. In fact, I consciously remember thinking that it might look bad that we always called for Izzo, but not Beal. Since Beal graduated, I think we've exclusively had white walk-ons (not counting Jonathan Wallace) so it's certainly possible that the current students just view Caprio as a walk-on, and not as a white walk-on. But when we had a white walk-on and a black walk-on at the same time, only the white one got the student section love.

I too felt a little bad for Bowen when Caprio got a huge ovation. Then he had a thunder slam. I felt good for the both of them. I am pretty sure the entire team felt pretty good for them too.
Cheer up, guys. A win is good thing.
I myself cheered quite loudly when Noriega was fielded in for USF. Partly for his name. Partly for the fact that he ascends race. Jeremy Lin says hi.

bando, I made the same comment to coast. I generally understand and accept the counter arguments, but it still doesn't feel quite right. I think Boz hit on one reason, and I think you touched on another.

If I post in this thread does it make the other threads feel bad or this thread not feel like it is a real part of Hoyatalk? Maybe I'll ask some posters to not post in this thread so the next time the Hoyas win a big game a thread like this does not get started.

We are playing Cuse on Wednesday right? Right? But people would rather talk about whether Gtown fans are racist (hey lets give Cuse folks some material--Lord knows they wouldn't come up with it themselves) or hurting our walk on's feelings by cheering for him?
A Cuse coach molested ball boys while his wife slept with players and recruits and Jim Boeheim looked the other way b/c he was too busy attacking the character of all the women and other students that his players were beating up. STAY FOCUSED PEOPLE. EDITED CUSE

I don't have any problem if a white kid (or a bunch of them) cheers for a guy who is white on a team that has had very few of them over the years. And I have no problem with a black guy cheering for a black tennis player because that's unusual, too, and he identifies with him. That's just human nature.
Do I want Nate to succeed partially because he's the only Georgetown starter in my race in over 20 years? Maybe a little.
That said, I root FOR EVERY SINGLE HOYA who comes across as a decent guy, and that's 99% of them.
And I definitely felt bad for Bowen when the crowd was cheering for Caprio rather than both, even though I understood it. I think Bowen just might be a super-talented guy for whom there is not enough room on this team, and I'm afraid he's going to leave because of it.

When I was a student, far more of my peers knew Bryon Jansen than knew anyone else. There were probably a host of reasons for that, at least some of them unique to Bryon -- he was just a manger before he became a walk-on and so was pretty significantly involved in extracurriculars other than basketball -- but that may be the same for Caprio. For instance, I wonder where he lived as a freshman. Copley, like the basketball players, or one of the four freshmen dorms, like every other freshman at Georgetown? Wait, since when do the basketball frosh not live in freshman dorms? When did this change? Shamel, Shenard, Rhese, and Ed lived in VCE (seventh floor I think) when we were frosh. Players only ended up in Copley and Village A in their later years, like any other freshman.

Also in Copley junior year, Shernard and Rhese were right across the hall from me. Highlight may have been playing college basketball on my PS and yelling "C'mon Rhese, dunk the damn ball!" right as my roommate walked in and seeing Rhese look at me quizzically from across the hall.

The walk ons are "pets" of every fanbase in America--did you not see that Hollywood made a movie about one that played at Notre Dame? (wonder if the sequel with him stealing money from people will be as popular?)
I went to HS with a guy who became the biggest walk on sensation in history of University of Minnesota--Hosea Crittenden. One of the nicest guys in the world--always was popular and that carried over to college. Hosea was so popular the fanbase wore his likeness as a mask and would chant "Play Hosea" and Clem Haskins would put him in and the place would erupt like Gophers just won on last second shot. Hosea was a stocky, slow and awful guard--they even exaggerated his stats in program--saying he averaged 13 ppg and 7 assists in HS. Guy might have had 13 pts in his career in HS. Hosea was African American/Black/Brown (whatever is socially accepted term for the PC police these days) so don't make a bigger deal out of this then it is--people get excited about Caprio because he's a guy who they know will likely struggle to play 40 minutes in his entire career and when he comes into the game-it's a good sign--means team has a game locked up.

For a while Hoya Freshman have stayed in Copley. The excuse I've heard is Copley has extra long beds. But really it's just a perk of being on the basketball team, which I'm fine with.

I know that all scholarship freshmen from 2005-2009 lived in Copley. And if that is the extent of their basketball-related perks -- well, that and the little athlete dining room in Leo's with the unlimited supply of Gatorade bottles -- that's fine. Pales in comparison to the competition, I am sure.

When you talk about facilities' impact on recruiting, you also need to remember that includes where the players live. UK, Memphis, Texas, etc all have dedicated houses / dorms for their athletes. No need to make JT3's job even harder by making him explain to recruits how getting to use a shower shared by the entire floor fits into the deflated basketball idea

With regard to Beal, I think it does have a lot to do with this race, but I think it's because the students see the white players who don't play much and assume they are all walk ons. Whereas a black player who doesn't play much is more often than not a scholarship guy.

I think it was the sage color analysis of Mark Tillmon early on this season which predicted that Caprio might earn minutes this season after a good showing in Kenner. Hahahaha. Tillmon is the worst.

So did anyone else get really uncomfortable when the students started chanting for Caprio late in today's game? As Hoyadrummer can tell you, I got physically anxious every time they cheered his name or went wild when he got a touch. Seriously, I was anxious to the point of embarrassment. I hope I'm not rehashing a previous discussion, but here are my general reasons for feeling this way: [/b]. I know, I know. But no one was chanting Bowen's name or going wild when he touched the ball, so it's clearly not just a benchwarmer thing. The sight of a mostly white student section loudly asking for a rarely used white player is really problematic for me. 2. Disrespect for JTIII. He's the coach and will put in whoever he damn well wants. Game management is not up for popular vote. 3. Disrespect for the other players. I think this is what bothers me the most. For the students to chant Jason Clark's name, he has to be kicking ass in a major way. For them to chant Caprio's, we just have to be ahead by a lot. How must the other players feel when the students are acclaiming a guy who hasn't done a single thing to deserve it? Furthermore, how embarrassed must Caprio be when this happens? [/ul] Maybe I'm overreacting, but this has always bothered me. Does anyone have a similar feeling?[/quote] +1
