Jeff continues to be solid for a rapidly improving Thunder team. Their team defense has improved markedly (#7 this year in FG % / 26th last year) and the addition of James Harden on the offensive end has been huge.
Loved that Dunk!

HIbbs led the Pacers tonight with 21 off the bench against the Lakers. Unfortunately for Hibbs, Lakers still won by 20+. I really don't get what OBrien was thinking. Phil Jackson certainly didn't get it and even Troy Murphy afterwards sounded like he didn't know why they went with a small lineup against the Lakers. They started Murphy at Center against Andrew Bynum and Danny Granger at PF against Pau Gasol. From the ESPN Recap: "I don't know whether Jim was baiting us or not, but he started Murphy on him [Bynum]," Jackson said. "Drew is a plus-7-footer with probably 30 pounds, 40 pounds on him at least. It's almost an impossible feat for them to cover Drew."
Murphy agreed. "We went with a small lineup against a big front line. It's tough. You're going to give up things inside, and that's what happened."I don't get it. Hibbs obviously had a pretty good game and is one of the few that can actually match up with Bynum size wise, plus we all have seen how he raises his level of play against other 7 footers. He needs to be on a team that values what he brings.

I guess O'Brien must have been thinking/hoping that the shorter quicker line up would give the Pacers their best chance at the offensive end. And while Bynum went crazy early on, the small line up did keep the Pacers in the game - I think the Lakers lead by 2 at the end of the first quarter.

Meh. O'Brien doesn't necessarily believe in Roy. He seems to be in disagreement with the media (both newspaper journalists and TV announcers) that Roy can be a feature player in the offense. O'Brien loves Troy Murphy and thinks the best lineup is with Troy at the five and four perimeter players surrounding him. Most Pacers fans disagree and want Murphy traded. Many of them think the best Pacers' lineup was when Murphy was unable to play because of injuries and it was Roy who was the lone true big man on the court. many of the veteran players seem to prefer Roy being out there on the floor and Roy probably gets more affirmation from them than O'Brien. I don't know what O'Brien's relationship is with Roy but I must imagine O'Brien must be driving his players crazy because he changes the starting lineup every game.
Now Roy didn't exactly stop Bynum either when he was out there but he made it a little more difficult for both Bynum and Gasol. I thought he could have been more aggressive on defense but then again when Roy is aggressive on that end he tends to pick up fouls. Yesterday's game he had three fouls and two of them came on his setting picks on offense. He has been called for that many times; its been a problem since college. And he is on the perimeter setting picks a lot because O'Brien's system is similar to III's in that it wants the middle of the paint cleared out for drives (although the Pacers are likely to take three-pointers). Still when Roy is the paint and posts up he keeps displaying that rare ability to score with one-on-one moves. He is the Pacers only post threat. Halfway through the season and he has as many double figure point games now as he did all during his rookie season. And last season he had no 20 point games and so far this season he has seven. Dennis Scott said that he'd vote Roy Most Improved Player but I doubt Roy is a legit candidate for that award.
He still has a lot to work on but like I predicted his offense is better than his defense. However he hurts himself and his field goal percentage with bad misses. He was 10 for 18 yesterday and from what I saw he should have been 11 for 14. On one play late in the game when the outcome was already decided he got behind Gasol while posting in the paint, caught a high arching pass and only had no one in his way for two points. But instead of slamming the ball in from one foot away he decided to slowly put up a layup attempt and gave Gasol enough time to reach from behind and block the shot. Roy crouched to get the ball and as he was rising back towards the basket Kobe came in and swatted the ball away. In that play he turned one field goal attempt into two and one surefire made basket into two missed shots. That was all on him. He could have dunked that first shot easily but he didn't. It makes you shake your head because he makes the more difficult back-to-the-basket shot attempts but he screws up on the easy ones.

Shocker, O'Brien had to miss the game, his assistant decided to start Roy, who went off for a solid game and a Pacers win.
If I wasn't too lazy, I'd look up the Pacers record with and without Hibbs in the starting lineup this season. I'm pretty sure the "with" lineups have largely outperformed the "without."

Troy Murphy - the epitome of the player that fills up the stat sheet without actually helping the team win.
