Markel Starks, 6-2 guard, Georgetown Fr: 9.7 mins, 1.5 pts, 0.7 assts, 28.3% fg, 60% ft Soph: 25.1 mins, 8.7 pts, 1.6 assts, 51.2% fg, 71.4% ft There wasn't much playing time for Starks last season behind Chris Wright, which is good because the slightly-built Starks wasn't ready to assume command. When Wright missed three games late in the season because of a wrist injury, Starks took over the point and Georgetown lost them all. Starks was supposed to battle with fellow reserve Vee Sanford for the starting job this year, but Sanford, perhaps seeing the writing on the wall, transferred to Dayton in the offseason, opening up even more opportunity to play. So far, Starks has taken full advantage. He is still a long way from being a knockdown shooter, but his ability to manage the Hoyas' intricate, Princeton-style offense is a major reason they are off to a 7-1 start. sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/seth_davis/12/05/Sophomores/1.html

"I usually don't make it my business to root for specific players, but I'm making an exception for Melo. He is endearing and earnest, and it's not his fault that he arrived in Syracuse amid sky-high expectations he was unprepared to meet." Probably not the best player to make an exception for though: "The girlfriend of Syracuse University basketball player Fab Melo told police that the two have had a "volatile relationship" and Melo has been physically violent with her four or five times since they began dating in October, according to a Syracuse police incident report. She told police Melo was very possessive and did not want her to associate with another male." www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/06/syracuse_university_basketball_4.htmlSMH

Davis' comments make me think he hasn't been paying attention to sports in the past few months--why do journalists always forget that they don't actually know the players/coaches? Interacting with them in an interview setting doesn't mean you know them as a person, and just b/c they answer your questions doesn't make them a good person.

Hidden amongst Syracuse's other legal troubles was this bit: www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/11/fab_melos_criminal_mischief_ch.htmlSo basically he was guilty, but if he stays out of trouble it will get off his record. Fine, this is typical of first-time offenders. However, I'm pretty sure this is in some way shape or form against the SU code of conduct. And I'm pretty sure there will not be any sort of sanction by the SU disciplinary body. They don't seem to take these things seriously.

As a guy covering college hoops he should have known about Melo's "issues" after they became public six or so months ago. I knew about it and I'm not on anyone's payroll to keep up with current events regarding high profile players on high profile teams.

WAIT! Did you guys just hijack a thread extolling Markel's remarkable jump in productivity this season and turn it into a rag on 'Cuse thread! What the heck is the matter with you guys!

Screw Cuse. Markel has been really, really solid. And the kid has some pit bull in him too which I love. He's obviously hit the weights and worked his tail off on many facets of his game. He deserves a lot of credit and some pub as well. The only thing I've remotely considered here and there so far this year as a mild negative is not every pass has to be a flashy, no-look type deal. Such a minor thing to take issue with but he has plenty of ability to be even better without having to try to make it look cool. Do that all you like as long as it's the right play. There have been a few occasions where it has come at the expense of the best option. Whatever. It's nitpicking. Markel has obviously put in the work and has the attitude of a winner. You can see he will accept nothing less. Love that about him. And he's a smart player too. He's been very conscious of the early, crappy fouls after the first couple of games. He adjusts on the fly and he reads defenses and anticipates his teammates' movement without the ball. Pretty darn impressive for a sophomore that hasn't yet played a conference game in his first year starting full time.

That kid's got a little meanery in him & lovin' his strong moves to the basket.

Markel would have to develop into quite the shooter and decision maker to transcend Wallace. But he pretty clearly has superior physical tools, e.g., speed, lateral quicks, hops, burst, etc.

He has a good chance to transcend J. Wallace IMO.... yall agree? No. Really? Not even a chance? Even though Markel has every physical advantage over Jon and has a jumpshot that is improving at a scary rate? I keep forgetting how high the pedestal many of you place Jon on.

The question was very clearly "a good chance to transcend J. Wallace."
Even forgetting whatever transcend is supposed to mean (it certainly doesn't really seem to mean 'be a better player by his senior year') I do not know why you are questioning Ed's response as if he said there was no chance.
I assume Ed read it as I did -- a good chance being more than 50%.
