President Barack Obama: Warmonger!
(Oh, take it easy!)
But on a serious note, where did this come from?
OK, it's not like the atrocities in Uganda and other parts of the surrounding area shouldn't be stopped, but I'm wondering where the impetus to send ground troops in came from.
I'm also wondering what 100 ground troops can really accomplish. Even Special Forces.
I am not going to make a political argument here, but I will note this from the letter notifying Congress:
Although the U.S. forces are combat-equipped, they will only be providing information, advice and assistance to partner nation forces, and they will not themselves engage LRA forces unless necessary for self-defense.
Hmmm. Pretty sure that's been said before.
I will hold off any more opinions until I've had some time to learn (and digest) more about this development.

To be honest, having known a few people in Special Forces, I think the difference here is the announcement. I'm under the impression this is not uncommon.
But I could be wrong.

SOF have been doing Foreign Internal Defense in many many places over the past few decades. It's generally not advertised, though even when the intent is to keep it off the radar, the operation is clandestine rather than covert (William Safire offers a useful basic explanation of the distinction here; basically, only the CIA is supposed to be engaged in covert, "the US government will deny any knowledge of your actions" type of operations).

Given your political leanings, the fact that you found it necessary to start a thread on this pretty much belies the "I am not going to make a political argument here" line, no?

I'm also wondering what 100 ground troops can really accomplish. Even Special Forces. Deleted - leave the personal insults out. Given the lack of military capability in this part of the world, 100 GIs could do alot. A 100 SOPs folks could, well I'll let you figure it out. Of the public reports available, read about how a couple Delta/DEVGRU squads took out thousands of AQ fighters back in late 2001.

While I appreciate SF and Russky's input, I think all subsequent posts in this thread are beyond moronic. Sub-moronic may apply.
The fact that I found it necessary to start a thread on the subject? Geez, you're right. This just isn't news at all. We should probably just ignore the whole thing. If you'll notice, I never came out and said I was against it. I just noted some questions. And I think it's a valid topic for discussion.
The post after that isn't even worth responding to. Yutz.

I think SF is right here - deploying these sorts of forces isn't uncommon, but public notification of it is unusual.
I think there's more to this than meets the eye. Uganda has been in Al-Shabbab's crosshairs for a while now because of their participation in the AU support for Somalia's transitional government. There were some bombings in Kampala not too long ago that were blamed on Al Shabbab. I wonder if we detected some sort of cooperation between Al Shabbab and the LRA. They'd certainly make an odd couple, but stranger things have happened.

To shed light, not heat on the subject, this action is done with pretty much bipartisan support under the following statute: www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-111s1067enr/pdf/BILLS-111s1067enr.pdf"Congress has passed a bill with broad bipartisan support calling upon the Obama administration to lead international efforts to end the threat to civilians posed by the brutal Lord's Resistance Army, or LRA. This historic legislation demonstrates Americans' broad and deep determination to see new action from President Obama to help apprehend Joseph Kony and other top LRA commanders who are wanted by the International Criminal Court. The bill provides support to disarm and disband Kony's militia, and to restore stability to those areas of Africa that have been terrorized by their history of mass atrocities, child abductions, and other horrific acts."

I am pretty amused that Rush Limbaugh used this opportunity to claim that Obama was targeting Christians and then quote approvingly from the LRA manifesto.
