Always thought he complained too much in the sidelines...but a very likable guy otherwise and a great ambassador for the BE.

He's a jerk. But he's always been a Big East guy. Between this, cancer and ahot younger wife, it's time to retire.

Teams are often defined largely by their rivals. The Yankees and Red Sox aren't the same without the other. The Celtics, Lakers. Ohio St., Michigan.
I've always believed that as a fan of one of those teams, you can want to pulverize the other every time you play, but you have to appreciate the team's existence because it's part of your own team's character. I would bet that Boeheim and the Thompsons agree.

Boeheim, on PTI today, took a different tack and stood up for the decision to jump.

I have lived in upstate ny for 53 years with the exception of my Georgetown years. I despise the orangeboys with all my being. Jimmy b's whining has grated on me for 35 years. But there has been no one more loyal to the big east and more cynical about the football/money morass. Reluctant props to him for his loyalty and his common sense.

Boeheim, on PTI today, took a different tack and stood up for the decision to jump. Watching that, you could tell he was doing so through gritted teeth. It was like a politician endorsing the guy who just beat him in the primary. This whole deal is a real slap in the face to Boeheim. He's spent his life building a top-notch college basketball program in Syracuse, and suddenly it's just an afterthought in a football conference move. His life's work, one of the top college basketball programs in the country, is nothing more than an accessory for a mediocre football team. Talk about insulting. And then, just to add some disrespect to the insult, he apparently wasn't even consulted on the move. He found out about it at the same time we found out about it. I'm no fan of Boeheim, but that's just classless by the school.

They all hate it and think its a disgrace. Of course Pitino at l'ville isnt in the same position as the other two, but he still has a voice (and started a blog that talked about it!!). When PTI asked him if this move meant Boeheim was going to retire earlier, he looked very uncomfortable and gave a non answer: "Kornheiser has as much say in that as this move does" I still dont think he coaches a day in the ACC, same with Calhoun, and Dixon will be gone after a year or two.

I think the idea that the BE will continue on without him (which wasn't a given up until about 30 minutes ago) will really be the straw that broke Boeheim's back. I think he could've lived with the decision if the BE imploded, but this will really eat at him and I don't think the censorship will continue for much longer.

Barring some sort of bizarro withdrawal from the ACC by Syracuse (and let's face it, absolutely nothing is out of the question these days), I'd concur that Jim Boeheim will retire at the end of the 2013-14 season before moving south, and receive a rousing ovation from all corners at the Big East tournament--a far cry from the days when Syracuse fans routinely booed him at the Garden into the early 1990's. (This, of course, after Georgetown takes out the Orangemen in the semifinal following Nate Lubick's 20 point, 20 rebound effort.) Calhoun? No such accolades offered in 2014, nor deserved.

Why would Dixon want to leave Pitt where he's been so successful?

The funeral services for Dave Gavitt will be held Thursday and I've got to believe Pops, Jimmy B., Lou Carneseca, Rollie, and Mike Tranghrese (sp?) will all be in attendance to pay respect to the man who helped shape each of their careers. With emotions running high, there's a good chance candid feelings will be exchanged ( I don't mean disrespectfully) and we may finally be privy to Boeheim's real sentiment if his private comments are overheard. My gut says he is outraged about the move and is only reluctantly carrying water for SU to protect his sucessor. Oh to be a fly on the wall in Providence on Thursday ...

Boeheim's PTI appearance reminded me of David St. Hubbins' reaction to Nigel Tufnel leaving Spinal Tap:
DAVID: I mean you saw exactly how many people who's been in the band over the years, 37 people's been in this band over the years. I mean It's like, you know, six months from now, I can't see myself missing NIGEL more than I might miss Ross McLochness, or Ronnie Pudding, or Danny Upham, or Little Danny Schindler, or any of those, you know...
MARTY: I can't believe it, you're lumping NIGEL in with uh you know these people you've played with for a short period of time
DAVID: Well, I'm sure I'd feel much worse if I weren't under such heavy sedation.

I would just like to point out, on the HoyaTalk Board, we have a thread discussing Jim Boeheim's class. Think about that. If that is not proof we are not already in bizzaro world, I do not know what is.

Why would Dixon want to leave Pitt where he's been so successful? (1)Hard to say how Pitt's ohysical style plays out in the ACC; they may have 3-4 guys foul out every game;(2) He is a TCU alum and played a part in their admission into the league, probably not too happy that TCU is left hanging;(3)This is a stark reminder to Dixon, Boeheim, even Calhoun that mediocre (at best) football programs run the show no matter how successful the bball program is.
