This weekend the nation will mark the 10th anniversary of that tragic day. In NYC, the new 9/11 Memorial will be opened.
Probably the worst day in American history during the lifetime of most board members, it did have the benefit of bringing the nation together as one... for a time at least. The new Memorial and the reconstruction at the site and surrounding areas in lower Manhattan demonstrate the best of what Americans are capable of.
Last night I watched 2 new documentaries on PBS. The first on the Memorial and new buildings, the second on the iron workers who worked around the clock for 8 months to conduct rescue and recovery efforts with the FDNY and NYPD, and then to remove "the pile" and clear the site. They brought back the vivid memories and emotions of that time.
This weekend is a good opportunity to reflect on what we share, what we have in common. Surely that far outweighs our differences.
It is also a time to thank once again the first responders and all who came together to help out. And, to thank our service men and women as well.
Wishing the very best to each and every one of you and your families.
Hoya Saxa!

Took my youngest son to the US Open this past Saturday. It's been 10 years since I was out in Flushing. I was there for the day back in '01 on the Thursday before 9/11. Like 9/11, I remember that day as an achingly blue sky with a hint of coolness in the air. The city that day seemed to show itself so well. Five days later things changed forever.
As I stood in line to have my bag searched Saturday morning (no knapsacks allowed!) I reflected back on my last visit in a seemingly more innocent time.

Approximately 50 people from my home town on Long Island died in the Twin Towers disaster. So, yes, probably my worst day. Of course, I have also lived through JFK's assassination and the Cuban missile crisis, when an undergrad at GU that were either tragic or downright scary. I hope we will all remember the people, who died in all the events of 911, and give praise to the wonderful people, who came to the rescue of others wounded.

well said by all.. also this am on the today show a fascinating and heartwarming piece by jenna bush about a camp thats gone on for ten years for kids whose parents perished in 9-11. very moving.... the camp started the summer after 9-11 and just finished this year.... if there can ever be anything positive out that day this was one thing.. the resilience of those kids and their counselors was very moving.... let us remember especially in this time of political rancor.. we can respond to tragedy and move on... as one country ..

Are people sticking around DC/NY this weekend and/or Monday? I'm generally not the overly paranoid type, but part of me is feeling that a long weekend trip to the Virginia country-side wouldn't be the worst of ideas.

I've been to Israel every year for the past five. The prime cause of death every year in Israel is traffic accidents. Last night, three people died due to unexpected flooding. Two weeks ago, there was an earthquake and a hurricane. One of the things about 9/11, for me, personally, was to confront fear. If you want to, almost every day of the year is either a key holiday or a key date in the radical Islamist calendar that could be cited as an increased risk for an attack. I am convinced that Washington and New York will be safe on 9/11.

Everything is a degree of risk. If you stay in D.C., do you go on a tour of the WH this weekend? If you live in NY, do you go down to ground zero? If not, then you're choosing to make a less risky decision, analogous to the decision to leave the city, just at a different level. I'm all for "let's try to live our lives normally" but IMO that doesn't mean we should be naive to the threat or put ourselves at much greater risk in order to receive minimal benefit.

Sorry, I just think that going to the countryside is excessive. Me only - it's not fair to extrapolate this to others. I will be flying tomorrow for business and in London on 9/11. To each their own.

Another thought provocing show was on CNN the other night (Footnotes to 911) which visited with people involved with the event (the people who checked in the terrorists for their flights, the air traffic controlers who tracked the flights, etc.) and how it had affected their lives over the last 10 years. I 'm sure it will be replayed over the weekend. Never forget!

another irony or coincidence or wierd lesson is that tommarrows gospel is the one about how one must forgive ones enemies seven times seventy times.. very interesting.. also the wall street journal had an editorial about a fr ryan who lost people in the twin towers and how different religions deal with enemies.. thoughtful ideas in difficult times. youd think or wish these times would help our politicians to be more thoughtful and put things in a better perspective but maybe thats asking too much..

A very solemn day.
Prayers and remembrance to all our fellow Hoyas who perished and their families.
Especially to Joe Shea B'76 and younger brother Danny
While we remember the victims of 9/11, please say a prayer for the victims of other tragedies that have struck both our Hoya community and the Nation at large.
Please remember Mark McGettrick B'76 KAL 007 and CT Fisher B'76 Pan Am 103

I woke up this morning and, while having my coffee, I could hear someone in my neighborhood playing, "Taps." Immediately, the tears started. Oddly perfect way to start this awful, tragic day. Condolences to all who've lost so much and so many.
