Any first hand accounts from those of you in DC?

Felt it in NC. Lost cell phone service. Already heard from colleagues they felt it in Manhatten.

Felt it pretty good up here in Baltimore. Supposedly a 5.9 with epicenter around Mineral, VA.

I was on a conference call with people from RTP, NC and in the middle of the call, the North Carolina people were saying "did you feel that?" Must have been some quake. Evacuated the Pentagon, Capitol, etc. How is Georgetown faring?

So is the earthquake Obama's fault or Bush's fault?
Haven't heard of any major structural damage anywhere. Everyone I've talked to seems to be fine.

felt it in DC. roof of bldg next to use partially collapsed. people now milling about without a lot of ideas of what to do next. Metro system is open but running slower than normal. Cell service interrupted. Shaking was pretty scary. Started slow and then really built up. My 17-month old slept through it, so I am told.
earthquake < eye teeth

My government building shook for about 30 seconds, then was evacuated while they checked for structural damage.
Our apartment in Georgetown has some brand new cracks in the ceiling. Ugh.

More East Coast media overload. If this happens in Chicago or Dallas or Phoenix it gets 15 seconds between the daily medical story and the closing Dow numbers on NBC Nightly News. One TV news ticker actually said this: "No threat of tsunami". For where, Portugal?
Note this number: 31. That's the number of earthquakes of similar strength in the US already this year. There were 100 in 1996 alone. Somehow, the Republic endured.
And amidst the temptations for the media to exaggerate even further (Megyn Kelly actually announced a report that the Washington Monument "was leaning"...memo to FNC: Twitter is not news.), Shep Smith had it right: there's really nothing to be alarmed about. Check the buildings, sure, but when a busted water pipe at the Pentagon is given the headline "Breaking News", well, that's both ironic (and a little overheated).
At least Geraldo Rivera hasn't linked this back to Khadafy...yet.

DC is not used to getting 5.9 earthquakes. Nor is Chicago, Dallas, Boston, Miami, NYC or most other major cities. If this quake had been centered near one of those cities, it would get more than 15 seconds on the news.

Yeah, easy to scoff at this from far away - and the media coverage may be a little much.
But I was having lunch about a block from the White House and it was pretty hairy for a few minutes there. A loud noise, a very big rumble - and then people started streaming out of buildings. A few screams in the place I was in - and the streets were suddenly jammed with very confused, nervous people.
Thank goodness it appears that this was fairly innocuous. But it really drove home that if (when?) a real disaster or attack occurs in downtown DC, it will be chaos. Now THAT is actually scary.

At least Geraldo Rivera hasn't linked this back to Khadafy...yet. Yeah but the vast majority of those 31 earthquakes were on the west coast. Virginia hasn't had an earthquake of this magnitude since 1897 and the largest earthquake ever recorded in Maryland was a paltry 2.6. I could go on (New Jersey, for example, hasn't had an earthquake approaching today's since 1783). You're comparing apples and oranges.

Yes, near the major metropolis of Trinidad. You're totally obfuscating the point. Yes, earthquakes happen every day. The news is where it happened. If a hurricane hit Los Angeles, or if it snowed five inches in Miami, you don't think that would be news?

As a lifetime east-coaster, I didn't have a clue in the world what was going on as I sat on the rooftop of my building enjoying the picture-perfect day. In fact, the thought "This is what an earthquake must feel like" ran through my head.
I just had no idea there was a fault line anywhere near here so the possibility of an earthquake never even occurred to me.

As my office is a block away from the Capitol, believe me, "earthquake" was not the first, second or third thought that came into my head. In fact, my (slightly delayed) response was: "Earthquake? Whew!!" EDIT: Also, this was pretty good: www.dcquake.com/
