Whereas representatives of the Communist regime in Beijing, in violation of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and of international law, have deliberately and repeatedly attacked United States players lawfully present in an international festival of sport and have thereby created a serious threat to a peaceful goodwill tour; and Whereas these attacks are part of a deliberate and systematic campaign of aggression that the Communist regime in Beijing has been waging against its guests and the nations symbolized by them in the collective exercise of their freedoms; and Whereas the United States is assisting the peoples of the entire world to protect their freedom and increase their love of basketball and has no territorial, military or political ambitions in that area, but desires only that all peoples should be left in peace to work out their own destinies in their own way: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled. That the Congress approves and supports the determination of the President, as Commander in Chief, to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the United States and to prevent further aggression.
Any interns/hillcritters want to get this forwarded up to Martha's Vineyard or can the auto-pen take care of this matter?

After seeing this, I wouldn't be surprised if the tour ends now. If you were one of the Hoyas, would you want to go back out there and put yourself at risk like this? Forget the risk for a second, if one of the Hoyas went out there and defended themselves, does anyone have any confidence that they wouldn't be arrested and railroaded? Im sorry, but I have to say, I agree. I think they should immediately go home. This is only going to play out against them. Do you really think the Chinese govt will spin this even neutrally?

Okay, I can see it now. It's either a shove or sort of side-armed punch, and not something he should have done. Well to be fair, they probably shouldn't have been tripping and clawing at his legs either. After watching Jason for 3 years and never seeing him lose his cool in this manner, I have to give him the benefit of the doubt. Yeah, i am not arguing against that. Just stating the facts. He got fouled very hard, reacted with a shove/push, and that precipitated the event. Even in those few seconds, you can tell how the game was going. He was mugged and no foul was called. And, the Chinese team was defending like they knew they could play like that.

Kind of surprised this hasn't taken off on some more news and/or political* sites yet, esp. now that there is video. NY Times has the AP version of the story up, along with the iconic photo of Jason getting the worst of it ( link).

For what its worth (only a little) the guys filling in for Pops and Doc on ESPN 980 were watching the video and agreed Hoyas got jumped- but the guy filling is a season ticket holder.
It will be interesting to see if this gets picked up by PTI or Around the horn and how they react to it.

Is it too much to ask that someone photoshop JTIII into the Tienanmen square photo of the dude in front of the tanks? We're 13 pages into this and it hasn't happened yet? Unbelievable.

So glad none of the fellas were seriously hurt. At the 55 second mark of the video when most of the Hoyas had already retreated, there is one Hoya on the ground who seemed to be dazed....any idea who that was?
I say we should get our 10 practices in and get the eff out of china.

Aaron Bowen was absolutely mugged. From the :20-:30 mark of the video, you see multiple Baiyi guys run him down, pummel him on the ground, and then Baiyi #5 joins in to throw a chair at his face while he's down there. Jason comes in to blow up #5 and knock the chair out of his hands in the midst of a second attempt (assisted by Moses, I believe). #5 was also the first or second guy off the Baiyi bench at the very beginning of the video.

Still waiting for you to back off your earlier comments in light of the photos coming out of Clark being stomped. You can keep on waiting. Stance stays the same. Engaging in a fight with a foreign team on their own home court doesn't do anything for the team or program IMO. You can stand up for yourself and your teammates without resorting to exchanging punches. I'm glad the players had each other's backs and in my earlier posts I suggested that the Chinese team was at fault; I didn't want the Hoyas to stoop to their level though. If you and others disagree with that so be it. Really? They're punching and kicking a kid on the ground. Are you supposed to ask them nicely to stop? How's the view up there on your high horse? What a completely idiotic position you've taken - one that is intentionally ignorant of what actually happened.

I am in complete shock after watching that video. Stunned. The images of a couple of our players trying to escape only to be converged on and clobbered is sickening. I think we have to get the hell out of China immediately. And if we don't, then I hope we go out and dominate Bayi in a clean, intense game of basketball. Lets rally behind our team everyone. This is a group of 18-22 year old kids who have to be pretty shaken.

If you and others disagree with that so be it. I agree with you in principle MCI -- you never want your team to get into this kind of thing -- ESPECIALLY during a goodwill tour to a foreign country. But in this case, with opposing players, staff, hangers-on and fans running onto the court to attack our guys? Kicking and stomping them? I can't fault the team for reacting the way they did. At least it ended quickly and JT3 took them off the court immediately. I guess we'll just have to respectfully disagree as you said.

I have to believe that cooler heads will prevail and the tour will continue. In fact it would not surprise me if the 2 teams play the rematch tomorrow. Since this is SUPPOSED to be a goodwill tour, those in charge will make it clear(especially to the Chinese team) that nothing like this will be repeated, and that there will be an actual basketball game. The referees will call things a little more evenly to keep things under control. And there will be massive security presence to keep the peace. Oh, and no plastic bottles will be allowed in the gym.

The officials hold as much blame as anyone. They called roughly 1.5 fouls/minute on us, but there's not a single foul in that exchange before the brawl starts? Really?

My photoshop skills are terrible, but I feel bad that I can't even come up with a good Kurt Shirt theme. Perhaps some PE? Theres no way I would allow us to play against this team again. I wouldnt play any more games unless they can guarantee security and fair officiating. Maybe offer to play the remaining games in a scrimmage fashion without keeping score? Something to get experience without giving their team/officials the incentive to subvert the rules and put our players in danger. Looks like Duke got no help from the officials either: www2.nbc17.com/sports/2011/aug/17/travel-weary-devils-rally-win-china-ar-1309697/
