After seeing the video I retract my turn the other cheek comment. To have someone on the floor and opposing players stomping on you or beating the daylights out of you is too much to take. Our guys had to defend Jason and whoever else was on the floor being attacked. Bravo. Also, it looks like III took everybody to the locker room as quickly as he could. Again, bravo.

Wow! The videos are so confusing, but it sure looks as if the Chinese started the brawl. Also, reading the first person account of the alum at the game seems to indicate that the Hoyas were just defending themselves. I was hoping today to read a story of another Hoya win and see the boxscore. If we do play on, China must have better security than the rent-a-cops that I saw walking away from the brawl. We will have to get lic's account of the game. Not too many smiley faces, I presume. The incident already has made the running boards: www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=4189045

Agree completely. Players were actively trying to get away from the fight and getting dragged to the ground.

Jason clearly took a swing after the hard foul. It's shouldn't have started an all out rumble where he was attacked by the entire country of China, but he did do that.

Give credit to JTIII for being EXTREMELY diplomatic. Would we have expected anything else? If he felt his team was at fault he would have been very apologetic. But he took the high road knowing that his team was more of the victim in this situation.

Looks more like a hard shove to me
Nothing that should start a fight like this. The Chinese bench is clear in like 2 seconds!

Jason clearly took a swing after the hard foul. It's shouldn't have started an all out rumble where he was attacked by the entire country of China, but he did do that. Okay, I can see it now. It's either a shove or sort of side-armed punch, and not something he should have done.

Still waiting for you to back off your earlier comments in light of the photos coming out of Clark being stomped. You can keep on waiting. Stance stays the same. Engaging in a fight with a foreign team on their own home court doesn't do anything for the team or program IMO. You can stand up for yourself and your teammates without resorting to exchanging punches. I'm glad the players had each other's backs and in my earlier posts I suggested that the Chinese team was at fault; I didn't want the Hoyas to stoop to their level though. If you and others disagree with that so be it. People arent disagreeing with you. It's just that you are wrong. If 15 people jumped your teammate, are you saying it is stooping to their level to run and protect your teammates? Should III, the team and the coaches have sat there and let it play itself out?

Interesting cultural thing. Not a doubt in my mind that our guys are "badder" than the guys they were up against. But in the USA, basketball players are relatively well-conditioned on what to do when a dust-up happens during a game. Other players DO NOT get involved. Other players on the court can help break it up, players on the bench do not leave the bench. Usually its 1 guy from each team getting into it, everybody else stays out or helps break it up, and the officials have things settled down in a matter of moments with the parties involved ejected.
In China? Not so much. A fight breaks out between 2 guys and all of a sudden half their bench is charging out there to attack. Shortly after that the rest of their team is throwing or wielding chairs.
All things considered, think the team handled themselves well. Defended themselves but did not escalate the matter by having uninvolved parties running out there swinging/stomping or by bringing foreign objects into the mix.

After seeing this, I wouldn't be surprised if the tour ends now. If you were one of the Hoyas, would you want to go back out there and put yourself at risk like this? Forget the risk for a second, if one of the Hoyas went out there and defended themselves, does anyone have any confidence that they wouldn't be arrested and railroaded?

I agree re bonding and, from what I've seen, that the whole thing was more the Chinese team's/refs' fault than ours.
But there's no way this is good beyond the bonding. It's horrible for the school and it seriously stains what was shaping up as a great world experience for our guys. We will be doubted by many who have long memories because of our reputation in the 80s (and, frankly, we did have a few thugs back in the day), but I'm confident that won't be the legacy of JT3, who is pure class. Nor of our players, who seem like pretty good guys to me.
I'm seriously ambivalent about whether we should stay there or get the hell back home. I'm leaning towards staying if we can get believable promises about better security. It will be so much better if the trip doesn't end like this but has a chance for finishing out on a brighter note.

Kind of surprised this hasn't taken off on some more news and/or political* sites yet, esp. now that there is video.
Betcha' Shepard Smith has this on tonight.
(*I know it has nothing to do with politics, but has that ever stopped anyone before?)

It's either a shove or sort of side-armed punch, and not something he should have done. Well to be fair, they probably shouldn't have been tripping and clawing at his legs either. After watching Jason for 3 years and never seeing him lose his cool in this manner, I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
