If that's the photo that ends up defining this coverage, we're all good. Hard to think any team would turn the other cheek at that point.
Still an unfortunate event, but this sure makes it look like we should shoulder the minority of the blame.

Sina Weibo is NOT a state-owned company. In fact, the PRC government is becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the relatively candid content that is flying there (and very difficult to crack down own). Sina does play ball on censorship, but the system is keyword-based, i.e., a post that mentions Tibet, for example, is dumped into a bucket for review. Pictures of a basketball game would not have been previewed even if a fight like this is relatively embarrassing for the parties involved.
That said, WBH's comment about "face" does not strike me as off the mark. This was the Army team. It would look very bad in the papers if the Army team got blown out by some American amateurs. I'm sure the Chinese team was told this and came out with some extra fire as a result. It's likely, knowing China, that something was also mentioned to the referees. Not saying they were conspiring to make us lose, but there was probably a feeling to try to keep the score close.
We competed and probably learned something. US-China relations have much bigger issues to handle than a heated basketball game. I imagine the Army isn't too happy either. Will have to scan the Chinese language press to see what they are saying.

As a friend just pointed out when looking at the NY Post photo- the guy in the middle isn't even a player- what the hell is he doing out there?

"Same thing happened a couple of days ago to Gib Arnold and his UH team. Beating the local pros in a small town when the hard fouls began, then pushing, posturing, etc. They were able to finish, though Arnold was shoved by an opposing player. He said it was good for his players to stand by each other."
This is a quote form a Uconn message board of all places. I assume the UH is Hawaii as they are also on a similar tour of china. funny how that one got no coverage. Georgetown is big time.

I do worry about the way the rest of this trip will play out. I dont mean to be xenophobic, but the Chinese govt doesnt exactly a good track record of correct media handling of these situations. I dont want our 18-21 year old to be hated by the entire country of China for the rest of their time there.

I think that photo confirms that source of where the blame really lies in this whole incident. Jason Clark's lack of handle.(Assuming that picture means it was him that got trapped on the sideline that initiated the whole thing)

Suggested response for any Hoyas who are receiving flak from others in their office/neighborhood/etc. for what happened in China: "Damn right we did. Now you best step back before I show you who taught Jason Clark how to throw a punch." Or, if the heckler happens to be a SUcks weenie: "Well, at least we were fighting men." Just a couple of suggestions. I have already used the second one today. If you aim at the king, you best not miss.

This could be the official dawn of a new era of Georgetown Basketball. For better or worse, this team shares a serious bond now. They're going to have a chip on their shoulder, and they're going to have each others backs through anything. I'd love to see this become the start of a journey in which we shock the world. I'm ready for basketball season. Who's with me?

I honestly joked about this to a few people via PM prior to this trip and was stunned when I was sent a few texts to hear what happened. Glad everyone is alright and like any confrontation/fight-=-takes 2 to fight--can't be 1 sided. From a picture of Jason Clark laying on ground and 3-4 guys trying to kick him--I'd be sickened to hear that nobody came to his defense--so glad teammates had each other's back.
I could care less about how Georgetown is portrayed by the media--especially those who want to make judgements and werent' there. We weren't there either--so wait for more to come out but from watching Hoyas play under III, I can say that all the history we have to go off would surprise me if Hoyas instigated anything.
It's done now--just wondering if they'll continue their trip?
As for Duke--and how they are perceived, I could care less. Inicident happened to Hoyas and just hope everything works out for the best for their safety. That's #1 and only concern. Have a safe trip and get home safe.

if this were the 80's, perry mcdonald would have gently separated the opposing teams players in order to resolve the situation peacefully......is that better Thanks.--Admin

There may be two sides to every story but there is no way to discount that pic of Jason getting stomped. After that occurred there was no choice but to get into it and I'm glad the guys had his back.
This trip was about bonding as a team and if they aren't bonded now they never will be. I'm prety sure this experience will be a big overall positive for the team.
