Ugh. Poor guy. Georgetown recruited Katenda somewhat, if I recall correctly. Good luck to him, and good for ND to honor his scholarship in some form.

Hopefully the doctors are wrong. If not, I can't help but feel horrible for the kid. Not that it's the end of the world but man.... tough, tough break.

Ugh. Poor guy. Georgetown recruited Katenda somewhat, if I recall correctly. Good luck to him, and good for ND to honor his scholarship in some form. Actually, it's even better than that. Unless some super-special dispensation is granted by the NCAA, ND is honoring his scholarship, period. Once a recruited player, always a recruited player and all that jazz for as long as he's receiving a scholarship, right? Kudos to ND for doing the right thing (for once). |

Truly a tragic story.
While ND is unquestionably doing the right thing, I would guess that they will be able to petition the NCAA to not have Katenda's scholarship count against their total. It really shouldn't under these circumstances.

I wonder if he'll be able to play again. Marquette's Center Otule has an artificial left eye because he was born with only one fully developed eye. I know it's a little different since he's had his condition his whole life rather than a recent accident. But perhaps there's hope that Katenda can go on and live a normal life.

I'm not sure if the term is medical hardship or not. For some reason, that rings a bell. In any case, I'm pretty sure that if a student athlete is injured, such that it ends his career, his scholarship can be honored by the school without counting against the limited number for the sport. But of course, the player is giving up his eligibility forever. So if there is a chance for a full recovery, then even if the school was willing to make such an offer, it would still be a tough decision for the player to make. But in that case, the school would deserve the credit for taking the risk of tying up a scholly this year just on the hopes that he does miraculously recover, to such a level that he can contribute to the team in future years. |

What one of us did not ever get poked in the eye during a pickup game. I did so in grad school, but to have one so severely that the docs think you might be permanently blind in that eye must mean it was some violent poke. Poor kid. Wish the best for him.
