Did I hear right that Marquette has four juco guys on its roster? Reminded me that historically GU hasn't reached into the juco ranks that much. Is it a philosophical thing, or just not being able to find the right players?

Is it a philosophical thing, or just not being able to find the right players? Going the juco route is traditionally the sign of a need unmet by recent recruiting and I think Georgetown has preferred to develop from within rather than take the chance that a juco player adapts immediately to the offense. Same with transfers--in the last 40 years, GU has only taken four scholarship transfers into the program: Terry Fenlon, Johnny Jones, Patrick Ewing Jr. and Julian Vaughn. Here are the list of junior college players that have played at Georgetown. Magee: Ron Lyons...1972,73 (Northwest WY CC) Thompson: Bill Thomas...1975,76 (North Hampton, PA) Ben Gillery...1987,88 (Hutchinson, KS) John Turner...1989 (Allegheny, MD) Brian Kelly...1991,92 (Cincinnati Tech, OH) George Butler...1994,95 (Tyler, TX) Jerome Williams...1995,96 (Montgomery, MD) Godwin Owinje...1996,97 (Bismarck, ND) Trez Kilpatrick...1998,99 (Neosho, KS) Esherick: Lee Scruggs...2000,01 (Daytona, FL) Thompson III: None

Pretty sure that Jay Crowder, who plays for 'quette, was the JUCO player of the year last year. If that is as good as it gets, I see little to no reason to invest too much in that pipeline.

Man, John Turner was a beast!
Too bad how things worked out for him that year. Would have loved to have had him back the second year, but totally understand why that was never going to happen.

Yes, Jae Crowder was the JUCO player of the year last year. We did a great job on him yesterday. I saw Marquette wreck ND in Milwaukee earlier this year, and Crowder had a great game. I think the problem w/the number of JUCOs for Marquette (and yes, it's at least 4) is that they don't get much of a chance to play together - really shows on defense, where they just don't communicate well, especially late in the shot clock (although that may be due to Buzz as much as who's on the floor).

To be fair, Buzz himself is actually on the floor. Based on the warning he got and the subsequent 35 second call we got, that was pretty effective defense.

you know that play was crap. the shot clock didn't reset which threw the team off completely. the warning should have come after mu regained possession.
anyone notice the back sweat through buzz's jacket. that brother needed a hosedown.

Good point. I've wondered why a player doens't just decide to "accidentally" plow into a coach who's out on the floor like that. Buzz was taking up enough space at some occasions that it was like playing 5 on 6.

What is it with coaches named Williams? They either sweat like the guy from UMCP or faint like the guy saving his timeouts.

It's also notable that the "Princeton" offense has a massive learning curve - if a player is not effective for a half-season, it's usually better to recruit frosh.

For Georgetown, recruiting JUCOs is just not an attractive option since it takes at least a full year to understand our offense. Look at Henry or Markel, they can play but need some extra time to play III's system. I also agree with comment about defense, you need some cohesiveness on both sides of the ball and JUCOs make this difficult. JV has really come into his own this season, that is after 3 years. Of course there will always be late bloomers, but let's remember most of these guys were either academic risks or needed the extra time to develop their games, both reasons would hinder their success at Georgetown.

Why not? At least it will force the refs to make a call...
