Ok people...You have until the end of the first weekend following New Year's Day and that IS IT- that is the last acceptable day to take down the Christmas lights/decorations/hideous blow up Santas, creepy plastic mangetrs, etc. And really, they should come down before New Year's Eve- which is not actually a Christmas tree- based holiday you lazy buggers. But mid January? Uh....no. Its just depressing. Take them down. People who keep them up until February should lose their christmas light priveleges for a year.
Christmas used to be a lot more enjoyable before it was a November through January proposition.

While I'm at it...inflatable lawn decorations are acceptable exactly never, "for the children" or not.

There are, in fact, 12 days of Christmas. It's not just a song. The Feast of the Epiphany on Jan. 6 is generally/traditionally the last day for Christmas decorations.
At least that's how I grew up.

Well if you want to be truly old world, you celebrate the pagan winter solstice, before the church made up the dec 25 date.

i think a lot of people (myself included) still follow the epiphany standard. mine come down the first satuday after epiphany and that is the date that the city picks up christmas trees as well.

Amen, Boz. Epiphany is the deadline. Now with 3 feet of snow and subzero temps I'll leave the lights on the house, but will unplug them now. I can't really get the ladder anywhere near the house and the drifts aren't quite high enough to just climb on to reach the gutters. My bigger pet peave is the beginning of the season. The earliest possible Christmas-ness should wait until the first Sunday of Advent. Thanksgiving Halloween is utterly redonkulous.

Not very libertarian, thebin.
Personally, I think the weirdest Christmas creep either way was when stores started doing "Last Minute Shopping Sales" on like Dec 13th.
I never purchase anything before a day with 2 in the tens spot. How the hell is Dec 13th lat minute?

At the risk of offending Mr. Godwin, the claim that Dec 25th was chosen solely to coincide with the winter solstice apparently has no documented appearance prior to appearing in anti-Church propaganda in 1930's Germany.

Sorry, Bin, but to honor one side of my family, the tree never goes down before Jan 7, which is Russian Christmas. The inflatable santa and his 2 reindeer just went down today, but I will be happy to leave it up year round and post pictures occasionally if it will keep you in such good cheer all year long.

In New Orleans, we have a different tradition regarding Christmas trees. After the new year, many people take off the Christmas ornaments and replace them with purple, green, and gold decorations, those colors being the traditional colors of Mardi Gras. One's tree does not come down until Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent.

I am with Boz. I took down the last of the office decorations this past weekend and that was too late. Wife had house done on January 2. Christmas now starts way too early and lasts way too long.

Wait, Christmas happened? Maybe that's why I have 45 voice mails from my mom.

Yeah i'd argue no one should be taking their decorations down until epiphany. But I also don't think you should be putting them up more than a week before christmas. In my family we keep the decorations up until my mom's birthday on Jan 13th.
