Also Stan Musial, without whom the world would never have had the name "Stan The Man." ;D Seriously though, good for Russell & congratulations. Out of curiosity, it seems like there are a whole truckload of people getting this award this year. Is this normal?* I thought it was usually like 3-4 people, but I could be wrong. Not a big deal, just wondering. In any event, Bush 43 should be invited to the event, both to congratulate his dad and, of course, to give Angela Merkel a celebratory back rub. *No, I am not calling Obama "abnormal." Just being curious.

Based on the General Motors IPO today, Pres. Obama must be on a roll. How many jobs has that saved/created? Not just GM, but all the suppliers, dealers, etc? And essentially saving FORD too since the suppliers who sell to all three US carmakers would have gone under too if they were reduced to only one buyer -- FORD.
Well done Mr. President, Secretary Geithner, Car Czar Steven Rattner and GM execs, Union Leaders, Bond Holders and everyone else who pitched in, took haircuts and managed to save an important American manufacturing industry.

Agreed Saxa. While they were doing all that, folks were pouring slurpees (or merlot) on unemployment checks in Congress and squealing about how they did not receive a proper invitation from the WH.

Not that I dislike the guy, but I don't see the need to give a medal to Prez Bush - who was a President and a war hero. Kind of like giving the Nobel Peace Price to a guy elected 15 minutes ago.

Seriously, is the urge to scatter partisan garbage posts all over every thread so irresistable? Give Bill Russell his due. If you need to talk about bailouts and take shots at members of Congress, make a new thread. On edit: 'garbage' was a clumsy attempt at allegory and too strong a term.

If you need to talk about bailouts and take shots at members of Congress, make a new thread. Perhaps if the post about Bill Russell had been on the Pro Sports board, or the title weren't "Obama gets one right"... thereby implying this is an exception, the thread could have avoided the direction it has taken. Or should we quote Luke 4:23, Physician Heal Theyself?

Perhaps it was the not-so-thinly veiled analysis in the thread of whether people deserved these awards or deserve what they get that caught my eye. I'm focused on that right now as the people with jobs and gross income seem entitled to undeserved tax cuts all while the unemployed will get squat because they don't have enough gross income to pay taxes (and then get a tax cut). It is unseemly and dishonorable.
Bill Russell deserves this recognition and I am fully supportive of any and all efforts that are properly classified as civil rights work. There seem to be many distinguished recipients this time around.

Touchy touchy touchy, Sir Saxa. Talk about an overread. I praise our President and you decide I mean to demean him. A demeaning title would have been: Obama gets one right for once Even if your mischaracterization were true, what does the Medal of Freedom have to do with the auto industry? As for thread placement, I put this here rather than Pro & College to signify that this award recognizes that there is far more to the recipient than 8 championships in a row.

I think it's a very classy and honorable gesture to a fine American and very worthy recipient of the country's highest civilian award.

None of this petty bickering takes away from the fact that Bill Russell is a class individual who deserves this award. Knock it off, guys.

Congrats to Bill Russell, from a die-hard Laker fan. The rest of you: making this about politics? Weak sauce.
