So the only true Washington, DC fans are those that we fans of the Astros before they became the Nats? Or are you talking about those who became fans after Strasburg? I think you mean Expos, not Astros.

What about native Washingtonians who were fans of the Senators up to 1971, became Orioles fans by default, then went back to the Nats once they arrived from Montreal? There are some of those left in town, like me.
If a phenom like Strasburg can get bandwagon-type fans to become true fans, nothing wrong with that.

In my case, I'm a Yankee fan first and foremost, but if I'm going to spend years of my adult life living in a city, I'd love for there to be a quality local baseball team to root for. So I've been a Nats fan to the extent that I go to games and hope the team brings some good baseball to the city.
At the end of the day, Strasburg was just fun. He was a big topic of conversation for a few weeks. He gave a lot of people a reason to get together on days they wouldn't otherwise just to watch a potentially brilliant young talent. I'm frustrated by his injury more as a fan of baseball generally than as a diehard Nats fan. It would be nice, though, if the Nats could field a respectable team one of these years.

Hank Steuver had a great column in the WaPo Style section a few months ago, comparing Nats fans to Georgetown Cupcake patrons. Namely, that DC people will do whatever they're told is cool, whether that's standing in line for over 45 minutes to buy an overpriced little minicupcake or go trek out to the Navy Yard to watch the next big thing in sports.

"Washington, First in War, First in Peace, Last in the American League". OK, so the League may have changed from the days of the Senators, but everything else is the same!

The Natinals have a nice base from which to work. Respectable next year, good in two. Be nice if they can re-sign Dunn.
