Great to see Brett may tough it out. Don't see that too often in sports.

In tradition of former Queens QB's--sounds like Favre showed "little Brett" to a female reporter via text message. Knowing Favre--he probably just showed the "tip of the iceburg" because he doesn't like to commit to doing anything 100%.

Great to see Brett may tough it out. Don't see that too often in sports. [/ducks] That's the thing. If he would just cut the drama out, he could be a great story. Grizzled old QB keeps coming back to play another year. The doubters say he's too old every time, but every time he keeps winning despite the gray hair. But Favre can't do that. He has to be the drama queen every offseason, making ESPN hang on his every word. He has to say he's quitting, then turn around and jump back in. He forces the team to constantly switch their plans based on what he's in the mood for doing that day, only to switch back the next day and force them to change everything again. The Packers got sick of it and told him they didn't need him anymore. But he's got the Vikings wrapped around his finger and bowing to his every wish. The schadenfreude coming from Wisconsin is overwhelming.

I agree with you Stig, except that part about making ESPN do anything.
It is quite the symbiotic relationship, I think we can all agree to that.
I'm not saying ESPN can ignore Brett Favre, necessarily. But they don't have to cover his every fart like it was another Deepwater Horizon explosion.
A simple 30-second report about Favre would be fine, and then they can move on to other stories. But that's not what they do and we all know it. (I know I said I was going to ignore Brett Favre, but I can't change the channel from ESPN when I am down in the gym torturing myself. I can only look away as often as possible, and look back five minutes later to see them still talking about Favre.)
ESPN is just like any other news/entertainment outfit. They want the drama, even if only so their personalities can complain about it. On air of course, for everyone to hear.
They definitely feed off each other.

Very true. ESPN is certainly a guilty party in this fiasco.

But other than Viking fans, who really cares about this? I would think that we would hear the sound of channels being changed across the nation after about 30 seconds of Favre coverage. How can that be good for ESPN's ratings?

How can that be good for ESPN's ratings? Well, to be fair, I don't see a thread on this board about Aaron Schobel and whether he's coming back or not.

Sure, because Aaron Schobel isn't a quarterback who holds numerous league records. That makes Favre's shenanigans moderately newsworthy. The LA Times today had a short story about Favre on page 7 of the sports section. That's appropriate.
