I know I'm coming in very late on this, but I was in Omaha last week.
What an amazing match. I'm sure that almost everything has been said that could be said about the match, but it was simply amazing.
My son and I were still in our hotel room after the USA thrilling last second victory advancing them to the knockout stage round of 16. We were getting ready to leave to go out for the day's activities when we stumbled onto the Isner-Mahut match. I think it was something like 26-26 in the fifth at that point. So we decided to watch the end of the match. A half hour later it was something like 30-30 and we decided that we didn't want to "waste" the whole day and figured we'd just hear about the match later. We went over to a Water park and as we were unloading our stuff, we heard an update and the match was still going strong -- I forget the exact score, but we joked that maybe the match would still be on when we got back to the hotel.
A couple of hours later, we took a break and went back to the car to eat lunch. To our shock, the match was still on. I think it was 59-58 at that point, and we once again joked about the match still being on when we got back to the hotel. As we all know now, the match did continue into the next day. It was just an amazing match. It's an overused cliche', but it truly was too bad that somebody had to lose.
ksf, actually, I heard Isner make that comment himself. It was the next day when they were interviewing the players before the match resumed. Isner said that he didn't have any skin on either pinky toes and basically said that his entire body was sore. Then they asked Mahut how he felt, and the said that he felt great. Of course, that didn't help him out in the long run -- the very, VERY long run.
