Exorcist. today's WP editorial almost the same thing I said in my post. It's the failure to mention that he ran for the hills to the USMCR after 5 deferments (including the one working for Katharine Graham -- why that's a special deferment, I'll never know - oh, I do).

SS - point acknowledged. Much of my experience is with current-day veterans, who draw little distinction between the reserves and active duty (almost certainly due to the combinations of a volunteer force and the fact that reserves now get actviated).

I still think that, had he kept his mouth shut, this never would have been an issue.

The role of the NG and Reserves in total force structure and integration into active duty components is vastly different than during the Vietnam era. You are correct - nowadays there is little distinction between reserves and active duty components.

I don't think that saying, "I serve in the U.S. Army," while being an Army reservist is really that bad.

Now the Lebanon thing? That's another story altogether. I don't know all the facts yet, but if he's implied that this happened as a member of the Army (when it did not), then that's a huge problem.

I never thought he was going to get the nomination anyway though.
