Politico was mentioning that McMahon's campaign took credit for passing the info to the NYT. They would look VERY bad if they passed on it, but the scuttlebutt in Politico was that this was what lots of money into opposition research buys you. I know you guys dislike the Times but you're in absolute fantasy land pretending that they only print this because they'd look bad otherwise. They printed it because it is newsworthy and because they're being cited all over the place today. A paper can have Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich on the opinion page and still report news. Ironic thing is that even though McMahon might have discovered it, Rob Simmons would be the better choice now for them given that he is a veteran. The initial quote that I responded to was that the mother of the liberal press took him down. On that, the record's spotty - McMahon's campaign passed to them, and they, as a semi-responsible newspaper, ran the story. The Politico item did also make the comment that someone (I forget who) commented that Blumenthal really hadn't been tested since 1988, and that, with one hard punch, he'd fall. On this, it's worth questioning whether the Times investigated him as hard as they would a Republican, since no one caught this for more than twenty years.

I am glad to see this criticism. My view is consistent with my view of the SBVFT - if you knowingly misrepresent your service or that of another or intend to benefit from such misrepresentations, you are despicable. If Blumenthal wins, he wins. If he loses, he loses. But, if I could vote for him and did, I would feel dirty for his having campaigned in that way. This story has every earmark of a deliberate leak from his own campaign. Put it out on the day that one of the best minds in the Senate will likely go down and everyone else is covering the "what does this mean" angle of the primaries. It won't bring him down - only video does that, and the print story leaked first. This CT race sure makes strange bedfellows. How do Republicans feel about supporting a Kennedy?

Really surprised that Chris Dodd and the DSCC came out in support so quickly on this one, before even Blumenthal himself has made any comment. (Of course, one has to ask, if Chris Dodd gives you a statement of support...does that really help you?) If a "bump" is anything like a "blip," things could get much, much worse indeed! (sorry for the painful memory, fellow Hoya fans).

The worst thing to happen to Blumenthal would be a statement of support from Joe Lieberman. That would turn this into a train wreck - equivalent of the stirring Cheney endorsement of John McCain in 2008. That was like administering the last rites to his campaign.

TC,
You are misinterpreting my post. I think they SHOULD be scouring Simmons statements regarding his wartime service since they did get burned on Blumenthal. I am actually with Boz on this as well, not so much liberal media bias (altho I think an element of this was in play) but it may be more of a laziness on the part of the press. Numerous matters I've worked on have received media interest, and it is astounding how often they get certain key facts wrong. I have to say that NPR once did a fairly lengthy report on a matter I worked on, and they got it substantially correct and fair, even though I was representing the "bad guy" side of the story. (But maybe that is because we did an off-the-record background interview with them). Regardless of the reason, there may not be a liberal media coverup, but there may be a general media laziness.

News dump of Ken Cuccinelli accepting money from a sham veterans group under investigation in 5+ states. He'll give it back or donate only if they're convicted. VA does not intend to investigate.

A candidate who made fraudulent claims about a combat service record is not fit for the Senate. And a Marine certainly knows better.
Did the NYT soft-sell the headline? Probably, but it wasn't going to matter anyway.

There may not be a liberal media coverup, but there may be a general media laziness. I absolutely agree with this. These records have been attainable for the length of Blumenthal's political career, right? Journalists have not been shy in recent years in using "fourth branch" and "honorable profession" type language in asking for state and federal shield laws. The fact remains that there is no requirement for journalists to perform a halfway competent job, and there's no punishment (other than public embarrasment or a potential lawsuit) when journalists are totally reckless (Jayson Blair). We've got Exhibit A right here. (By the way, I'm generally on board with shield laws, I just dislike the for-profit journalism industry's rhetoric for why they are needed. There's a difference between providing a public service and being part of a profession.)

Oh man, I can't stop laughing at this.
How did he not get "http://www.kevinmillenforcongress.com"? Is JTII domainsquatting on it just to keep him down?
According to WHOIS records, no one registered the ".com".--Admin

Running against Kendrick Meek in Florida is Jeff Greene - I did a double-take the first time I saw the Google ad.

And Blumenthal's pretty clearly a moron. I have my doubts this changes the race, though. His biggest problem is saying he simply misspoke a few times. Now everyone is going to be digging through all of his public statements and we'll get a video showing all the times he said he served in Vietnam or came back from Vietnam. And maybe someone will be able to splice something together tracking what Shays said about the lie getting bigger and bigger. That keeps the story alive and makes it a problem for Blumenthal.

I like how the article says Shays is a good friend of Blumenthal and then he spends the entire article throwing him gently under the bus.
