Evan Daniels likes Thompson's toughness:
"Sam Thompson, SF, Mac Irvin Fire – Props to Thompson, a 6-foot-6 wing out of Chicago (Ill.) Whitney Young, for gutting it out. He’s still recovering from an ankle injury, but is physically and mentally tough enough to play through the pain. He’s an athletic wing with a versatile game. He spent some time on the ball and ran the pick and roll pretty well. In transition he finished at the rim and had a ridiculous block saving a bucket late in the game. His overall skill set is impressive and he’s got the look of a terrific prospect."

Daniels on Thompson again, this time from Day 2:
"Sam Thompson, SF, Mac Irvin Fire – Yesterday we thought Thompson was pretty good, today he was terrific. He’s extremely versatile and can play a variety of positions. He’s a much better athlete that we’ve given him credit for and he’s got a terrific feel for the game. At 6-foot-7 he’s got great size for playing th wing spot and he’s active not only on offense, but also on the defensive end."

I think this kid is a MUST GET---just love the defensive ability to check so many positions and in all honesty--with development in college/strength--he's a top 5 pick in Lottery.
A class of Thompson, Christmas, Tyrone Johnson, and fill in blank--although I'm a huge JOB fan--would be sick!

Agree with RDF, that would be a monster class and Thompson has lottery potential. I've compared him before to Andre Iguodala, Evan Turner's another guy he's a lot like. That type of size/versatility/athleticism with court vision, unselfishness, and the desire/length to be a tremendous defender. There's probably not a class of 2011 wing that I'd want more.

We need to turn up the heat on Sam. Oregon State had a big head start with him given his family ties with the Robinson's. Also, one of his better friends, Ahmad Starks committed to OSU for this upcoming season. He's still there for the taking but we gotta start moving on him. And he was probably never going to go to Illinois. He's been pretty consistent in saying that he wanted to go out of state for school. No worries about qualfying either. The kid could get into Georgetown on his own without basketball.

Not sure if this is an "open" period where coaches can visit recruits, attend open gyms/practices, etc., but JT III will be in Chicago this week. Hopefully he gets a chance to check in with whomever he can legally as it relates to Sam Thompson.

Kid just got a 29 on his ACT--qualifying isn't a problem at all.

I think the heat is up very high; considering he's listing Hoyas in final five. If I had to venture to guess I'd say this in order of preference:
1-Branden Dawson 1A-Sam
I think Hoyas are behind Purdue for Dawson, but in good shape with Sam. Just my thought.

Gotta like that ID. Getting either of those two kids would be awesome. We need some awesome around here. Last awesome we had was Greg, and he's gone already!
Get 1 or 1A, add Rakeem and TY... hey man, I and many others would be delighted!

Dawson's latest update said he's now going to decide when he feels it's right--his mom is tired of the phone calls and sure sounded to me like he knows he wants to go to Purdue and end the process. Very talented guy--and more of a PF/SF type where Sam is more of a SF/SG type--with more perimeter skills, ball handling, while Branden Dawson is more physical, beast on glass, etc....

From the article, it looks like he has his head on right. I like how he's considering everything, although he hasn't mentioned possible pick-up games with POTUS @ White House (considering the family connection).

What is the family connection? Did I miss that?

What is the family connection? Did I miss that? Sam Thompson is apparently close with Craig Robinson, Oregon State's coach and Michelle Obama's brother.

The Thompsons and the Robinsons go way back. Sam has known Coach Robinson since he was a kid. Whitney Young is the high school that Michelle Obama attended and Coach Robinson also has a son who is around Sam's age.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I know that Robinson is brother in law of the POTUS, but I wasn't aware of the Robinson/Thompson link. That does explain a lot, since it is hard to understand why Oregon State would otherwise be in his final five. I don't think they've been real relevant since the days of The Sieve.

From ESPN.com's coverage of Day 1 at NBPA:
" Sam Thompson's (Chicago/ Whitney Young) blocked shot on Anthony Davis (Chicago/ Perspectives) was a high-level play, to say the least. Davis was attacking the basket on a fast break and Thompson went airborne for a clean block that brought the crowd to its feet."

Multiple sources have been reporting that Sam Thompson and Anthony Davis are seriously considering going to Ohio State together, unfortunately. Should be interesting to see how things play out...

In an article from Scout's Scott Phillips from the Nike Skills Academy, Thompson is quoted as saying Ohio State, Oregon State and Florida have been recruiting him longer and are "a little bit ahead" of Georgetown and Kansas. The article also said that Kansas and Georgetown haven't offered, which I find to be somewhat odd.

What if GU has turned up the heat on Rodney Hood, who plays the same pos, is a better shooter, two inches taller and is a Kirby recruit? Makes things a little more interesting @ SF.
