The answer is quite simple---we play enough schools from mid-major conferences as it is. If we're going to play a mid-major, we want to play one that's actually going to challenge us like ODU or Duke. Otherwise, we need to save room on the schedule for teams from major conferences like Washington, Temple, Butler and Memphis.

I thought we had a ban on playing schools where "students" burn furniture or overdose on cocaine post-draft.

I thought we had a ban on playing schools where "students" burn furniture or overdose on cocaine post-draft. I was about to say "No,we don't--we play Nova every year", but then I realized they only do cocaine during the season.

WV still burns furniture. So i guess we don't mind that part. But the difference is, at WVU they do it for warmth because Morgantown has no electricity. College Park on the other hand is just full of idiots.

I would hope that the Old Spice Classic cleared some of that up

I would hope that the Old Spice Classic cleared some of that up Probably not in the way everyone thinks though. You couldn't have placed that game in a worse possible spot to generate buzz if you tried. It was late on the Sunday afternoon after Thanksgiving, on the same day (and possibly the same time IIRC) as a Redskins game, and in the third place game of a tournament in front of about 2,000 people in Disney World. I was at the game...the Milk House wasn't exactly bursting with excitement. I actually also have the Post's sports section from the following day--the game article is on the bottom half of the below the fold part of the front page. The fact that we won by 27 didn't help matters. I'm being honest here--I don't think a GU-Maryland game/series played locally would generate nearly as much buzz as is commonly assumed. It might get some column inches out of Feinstein, Wilbon, Kornheiser, etc--but they'd just be reworded versions of the same platitudes they spout every once in a while on this subject. Dan Steinberg I guess would get a kick out of it, but it comes a year late since the Greivis the Golden Goose of the Sports Bog is out of eligibility. Plus IDK if Steinberg's written anything about GU basketball outside of comments in the Atlantic 11 since Hoya fans wore bunny suits to NCAA Regionals. The BB&T would actually be an even worse option if you wanted any kind of national attention...isn't that thing still shown in between reruns of the Maury Povich Show on MyNetworkTV or whatever public access channel will have him these days? Maybe it's MASN now.

It's also misleading to suggest that "rivalry" games like GU-Maryland are the norm in college basketball. Besides Louisville-Kentucky, how many are there if you don't count the ones mandated by conference play (e.g., NC-Duke)?

The big 5 in philly and Xavier v. Cinci are the other big non conference local rivalry game that gets played annually that I can think of off the top of my head.

Gonzaga and UW never play each other anymore and their fans have the same sort of back and forth ours do. but the rest are all legit.

Feinstein told me to "call Thompson and ask him" when I brought this up last fall. Irregardless of who's fault it is, they should play, imo.

this conversation should always be reserved for the long period between seasons.

Possibly the long period between jai-alai and tossing the caber?
