UNC finished 5-11 in Conference, 16-15 overall??
Yes, I know they lost great kids to the NBA from last year's team, but don't they still have a boatload of top ranked recruits?

I'd put up with a season like this if it meant two championships in the decade.

I'd put up with a season like this if it meant two championships in the decade. Good point. People down here need to understand that. THere's an awful lot of "what have you done for me lately?" going on in the Gator Nation. Sure we won 2 National Championships and have won 20 games a year in the 3 seasons since then, but the ultimate success bred contempt. Now I'm not one for lowering the bar, but the sour grumbling simply isn't justified. In Florida's case, after our second title, we lost our entire starting 5, 4 of which were Juniors and all went on tho the NBA. We also lost 4 year starting marksman Lee Humphrey as well as our 6th man, Chris Richard, who is also playing in the NBA. Additionally, since that time, we have had a ridiculous run of unexpected attrition. Adam Allen has missed 2 seasons to injury and might never return. Kenny Kadji has missed a complete season as well as most of another. Eloy Vargas transferred. Mareese Speights left after his sophomore season, as did Nick Calathes. Jai Lucas left totally unexpectedly 1 game into his sophomore season. Jonathon Mitchell transferred and is now scoring 16 points a game for an A-10 team. And Brandon Powell quit the team. All of that is within the past 3 years! Now I don't know what kind of controversy UNC has had, but I would find it hard to believe that they have had as much to overcome in such a short period of time. The bottom line is that while we always strive for, as well we should, the ultimate goals -- confrence titles, conference tourny titles, NCAA tourney success etc... -- there are many things to be proud of along the way. And you need to enjoy those rides as well. If you place all you eggs in one basket, so to speak, then you are doing nothing but setting yourself up for failure the vast majority of the time.

OK, who had "25" in the pool?
That, of course, being the "How many hours until this turns into a Florida Gators discussion?" pool.

Nice try. I think you need to work on your reading comprehension. The point was essentially taking the good with the bad. kc made a good point, simply put that looking from the "outside," he would be willing to suffer through the year UNC is having this season, if the high points were to include their two recent title seasons. All of us woulld likely say the same thing if viewed in that light. But it really ends up, ultimately, being a question of perspective. If you haven't tasted the forbidden fruit, then you really don't know what you are missing. But if you have, then anything short of tasting it again is rather bittersweet at best.

So, there's a variety of reasons for any team underperforming with top recruits:
[/li][li] No evaluation is perfect. Especially since you rarely see write-ups on coachability or work ethic.
[/li][li] Some players are higher ranked because of who they commit to.
[/li][li] Experience is important.
[/li][li] Talent mix is important -- you need scorers, distributors, rebounders, defenders. Can't have all one type.
[/li][li] Very few, if any, coaches can truly adjust their style to talent effectively for large changes. Should UNC be running this much with Larry Drew running the point, no real scorers and their strength being unskilled size down low? Of course not. But he is.
I thought this was a snarky swipe at those fools over on the basketball board screaming about doom and gloom and how terrible JTIII because he cant recruit.
Recruiting is everything and nothing.
