Didn't we ruin the Denny Crum court signing too? Yes

What makes this win so big is that now if we win our 2 remaining home games and 1 BET game (although we might not even need this) we will be a 3 seed at worst. A 5-6 seed would have been very much in play if the wheels would have come off today.

Great post from their rivals site: "it's a sad state of affairs (no pun intended) when Denny Crum walks out at the under 4 min timeout...on F'ing Denny Crum night. " I was there with SFO, SFHoya, McBricks and others when the court was dedicated to Crumb...we won by a similar score.

I'm not sure why people are so down on how we played in the first half. We went in down 6 to a good team on the road. Our offense was working well and our defense was decent, they just hit their shots. What scared me the most in the first half was the defense in the post when Julian was on the bench. While Greg generally did a good job, it seemed like Jennings could anywhere on the court against Jerrelle. The good news was that it was Terrence Jennings not Arinze Onuaku so he couldn't really take advantage and only had 4 points all game, but still its something to look at. Julian is a little foul prone so in the future we're going to need to rely on Benimon to be able to play passable D on big men. Hopefully this was just a one time occurrence.

Austin also once again came within 1 point of outscoring the entire opposition in the second half... damn Edgar Sosa and-one.

What a game. A joy to watch that 2nd half.
Something that I started thinking about as Austin was going off: Who is the last Hoya who could look so good for 15-20 minutes at a time?
I'm not saying that Austin is a better player than Jeff, Roy or even Sweets, but it's so much harder for a big man to go on one of those runs because he is reliant on the guards getting him the ball. Jeff played a lot on the wing obviously, but his 3 was never such a weapon as Austin's.
Again, I haven't lost all perspective, I'm just saying, who was the last guy we had who could go on a run like Austin had tonight or vs. UConn?

great win. see what happens when you play defense. you can have two guys doing most of the scoring when you lock down the opponent and rebound. great effort by the team. i thought the contributions of hollis, vee and jb really prevented us from getting down big the first half. hollis had a couple huge 3's and 2 great plays defensively. vee gave us some good minutes on both ends. jb had that great spin move the first half and didn't turn it over once.
beat nd saturday. one game at a time.

That was a LONG time ago Dan. How about Iverson and Page I think I agree with Dan. Both A.I. and Victor were volume shooters who wore you down with their physicality. They always had the ball in their hands. At his best, Austin is 1980 Sleepy Floyd - although not defensively. Playing on a team with other reasonable scoring threats - Floyd had Duren and Shelton - Sleepy would get 25 in a smooth, almost matter of fact manner and he wouldn't need a lot of touches to do it.

Not to mention that 25 would likely be 32 in today's game with the 3 point line.

who was the last guy we had who could go on a run like Austin had tonight or vs. UConn? Dan, Chris, Sleepy is still one of my all time favorite Hoyas. And that 1980 Team was so special I forgive the ultimate heartache! Also, Chris, you make excellent points as always. But when I read the question as stated above -- the last guy who could "go on a run" like that? Answering THAT question, and only that question, I still come up with Iverson and Page.

A 5-6 seed would have been very much in play if the wheels would have come off today. That's how I feel, too. I think we have a pretty good strangehold on the 3 seed with that win last night. If we win our 2 home games, even losses at WVU and in the BET wouldnt hurt our spot. Not to state the obvious, but almost every major conference team in the top 25 is going to lose in their conference tourney, and some will bow out early, too. So, it's hard to make much of an early exit there. We just have too many good wins to lose a 3 seed.

The run thing -- I'd go with Braswell, Shenard or Page. But to do it with the kind of consistent efficiency that Austin has -- none of those guys, nor Iverson, who did it completely differently as well -- are close.

Just want to point out we held a team that gather's 40% of their misses and wastop 10 in the nation in grabbing offensive boards to only 5 offensive rebounds and 16.7% for the game. The guys reall stepped it up on the defensive glass.
We also held them to less than their average # of steals and turnovers forced.

That first half wasn't great, but it was a long way from our worst half of the season. Rutgers, UConn, Nova and Cuse I games all had far worse performances for a half. I think it was more that Louisville played out of their minds in the first 20 minutes. Sosa was on fire and they simply didn't turn the ball over at all. We did a good job to weather that storm and stay in the ballgame on the road. And the job Monroe did neutralizing Samuels has been underplayed so far, I think. He absolutely frustrated Samardo to the point where it looked like Samuels just gave up at a few points (granted, the kid missed a few bunnies, but Monroe and co. made him earn his way to the bucket even on those). And Greg schooled him a few times on the offensive end. It was an absolute shellacking - reminiscent of what GM did to Thabeet up in Hartford last season. When he's good, he's verrrrrrrrry good. A lot like this team.

That was my point - Eric was the only guy I can remember who had seemingly effortless runs with lights-out outside shooting like Austin. SirSaxa - if you're just talking about piling up points fast then I agree. I put a little more nuance into my answer.
