He's off the island. Last time we saw him he was in los Angeles. I assume he's the person who's coming to the island that jacob spoke of. I mean he has to come back in some way. They wouldn't list him in the credits for that one moment in the premier.

Everybody is thinking that Desmond will be coming to the island. I think there was a reference (either in the show or some of the chats) that Desmond will play a major role in the denouement (good word, Boz).

From Lostpedia, here is a pretty succinct summary of where we left Desmond in Season 5:
[Desmond] and Penny went into hiding, where they had a son and lived on their boat until Desmond had a vivid dream he called a "memory" telling him to find Daniel Faraday's mother in order to help the people left behind. After finding Eloise Hawking, he could not be convinced to go back despite Eloise's warning that the Island was "not done" with him yet. He was later shot by Benjamin Linus, who was trying to kill Penny, but got up and attacked Ben, throwing him into the water. Desmond suffered complications from his gun shot but was taken to the hospital and survived, telling Penny he would never leave her again.
Not counting his Sideways appearance on the plane this season of course.
Incidentally, and this probably is of interest only to me as a Dickens fan, it is interesting to note that Desmond and Penny's yacht is called "Our Mutual Friend," named after the book Desmond said would be the last he ever would read before he died.
The title refers to a character in the book, of course, but thematically, "our mutual friend" for Dickens also means "death." (which would make it fitting to be the last book you read.)
If anyone is ever interested in reading any Dickens, don't bother with Tale Of Two Cities, Oliver Twist or the auto-biographical David Copperfield (though these are all good, of course). Read "Our Mutual Friend." IMO, it is Dickens best and darkest work, though it is very funny at times with black and violent humor.
Jenny Wren is an amazing character (though a lousy Paul McCartney song), and I'd be willing to bet she is the basis for a lot of scary movies about creepy kids, as well as for the "Little Sisters" in the video game, Bioshock.
Anyway, end of geek speech. Didn't really mean to go on this long when I started typing.

Boz- thanks for the info great post. Really what makes this show is the characters they are terriffic.
I do like the whole parallel universe paradigm. I guess the Island has sunk and the castaways are living out there altered lives in 2004. I like how they are telling this side of the story and at the same time we see them attempting to rewrite history didnt work..
Its going ot be intresting if Jack remembers whats going on. I think theres somthign inside of him that feels off balance and confused....
Whats going to be compelling is who's in who's camp. These is a battle within each character for sure. LIke whos good and whos evil ya know.
At least some mysteries got solved, much more to go.. Cant wait for tuesday..

What do you guys think the role of Jacks Dad, Christian??
Can he somehow be the alter ego of the smoke monster?
I recall him being on the island in the 1950's with widmore....
Any guesses on his signficance??

Oh, I call B---S--- on ABC.
They have changed the promo for tonight's show.
Last week it was "the man who has caused so much death will face his demise."
Today, it is "the man who has caused so much death may face his demise.
That is so freakin' lame.
ER used to pull crap like that all the time.

Wait - didn't everyone die on ER though? Those rooftop helicopters had a terrible safety record.

So alternative Ben is also manipulative and scheming but just less so.
Screw the principle, your Frenchy/history geek/smoking hot psuedo daughter doesn't need to go to Yale, Ben. Write the damn recommendation for her and send her somewhere in the UC system. Its still 2004 and they haven't gone broke yet.

haha.
I liked tonight's episode. Ben redeemed himself.
So i guess widmore was the man coming to the island.
And we finally learned about richard!
Jack's finally bought in.
It's all coming together now.
is about to hit the fan.

Claire said she has had "Locke" as a friend for three years. This confuses me, since wasn't John Locke off the island during this period. Did smokey adopt the appearance of Locke before his body was brought back?
If Widmore is here, can Desmond and Penny be far behind?

She just sees Smokie/MIB, regardless of his physical manifestation.

She just sees Smokie/MIB, regardless of his physical manifestation. This is how i saw it. But even if it really is "Locke" i cant really get up set about this, it is hardly the most ridiculous thing that the producers have asked us to believe. I dont know why ben didnt just wait for Alex to get into Yale and then get the principle fired. Is it really that hard to figure out, Ben? So does what Richard said about Jacob being a sham mean that this has all just been an allegory about the dangers of organized religion? Or is it a call to always question authority? Either way that is kind of lame. So how many people has Jacob "touched"? Jack and Richard, ok. but what about sayid, locke, ben, jin/sun, claire, Hurley? Will Jack get some sweet power that will kill smockie? Like lightning or something? That is what i am hoping for. Widmore didnt seem too concerned that there were "people on the beach." I feel like if i were him and i was going back to this island and there were people on the beach again i would be more concerned about it. OR is he in cahoots with jacob who told widmore all about what is going on. Who's side is widmore on? Not bens, but why locke's?

I Think he was just disillusioned and then jack showed him the light. I think he felt the way ben did when he killed Jacob.
I assume Widmore is going to be on the same side as ben. Widmore was always on Jacob's side. I mean he was the leader of the others.
Is Desmond on the sub? I want desmond back.

HSB I was actually thinking the opposite. I was thinking widmore was going to be on Flocks side. Then I figured Desomnd and penny would be coming to the island as well on there boat and oppose widmore and be on jacks, hurleys, and bens side.
Seems that we are mobilizing for a war for the protection of the island and these 2 sides will clash. Who will be the ultimate protector?
Last weeks episode was the best of the seasonfor me, No surprise it was Ben centric. Hes is probably the best character on the show. Seems he got his redemption.
Anyways I think we see Desmond and Penny within the next few episodes to round out the players in the war..

Also, Sideways Ben was at the Island with his dirtbag dad, so does that mean the island sinks after he left? HOW DOES IT SINK? The nuke goes off??

Wasn't Michael unable to kill himself back in season 2 or so? Is he "touched"? Where is he, anyway?

I think he finally found a way to die right? i can remember Anyway i also want to point out that my first theory for the season (that they will all return no matter what to the island) is definitely right. Ben said to lapidas that even though lapidas slept through the flight the first time he is still on the island. I feel so awesome right now.

Mostly a set up episode... looks like we get the juicy stuff next week!
Thoughts: 1) sawyer as a cop was cool especially having him perform a sting and making it look like he was still pulling cons! 2) Charlotte being back even if it's just for the one episode was cool. 3) in the flash sideways miles says charlotte works with his dad at the museum. So it sounds like dr. chang is alive and well and has a good relationship with his son. 4) sawyer isn't so lucky. still obsessed with getting revenge on Anthony Cooper. He's still pretty much alone. Not much has changed for sawyer except like he says he was either going to become a criminal or a cop and in this world he chose cop. However, perhaps all is not lost since he has his friendship with miles. 5) Interested to see how the whole battle between widmore and smokey will play out. If there is one. Who's side is Widmore on. I'm still under the impression he's against smokey. But i wouldn't be surprised if lost pulled a fast one on me. 6) so is claire really over it as it appeared at the end of the episode? I doubt it. 7) So flocke had a mother who was crazy? Who made him who he is today as a result? Hmm can't wait to find out more.

I nearly jumped out of my seat screaming "YES! YES!" after the preview that the next episode will be Richard-based. I'm sick of the alternate-universe episodes, and it looks like we'll be getting a Richard flashback episode instead.
