Say what you will about Bob Knight, but I thought his comments in this article were great. I definitely think the guy has made some questionable decisions, but I agree completely with his sentiment here: "We've gotten into this situation where integrity is really lacking and that's why I'm glad I'm not coaching," he said. "You see we've got a coach at Kentucky [John Calipari], who put two schools on probation and he's still coaching. I really don't understand that. "And very few people know this, but a kid can play the first semester as a freshman, pass six hours of anything and play in the NCAA tournament without ever attending a class in the second semester. I don't think that's right." sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4752725Discuss

Knight's far from perfect, but his perspective is right on target. What's truly sad are the comments I've seen online in reaction to what he said that reject his observations about Calipari because of Knight's personal shortcomings. No wonder a guy like Calipari can continue to find employment.

The fact that Calipari is still coaching is the best indictment of the hypocrisy and absurdity of the NCAA and their regulations. The fact that he is coaching at Kentucky -- a historic flag ship of college basketball -- is a national tragedy. I mean I could understand him coaching at some podunk, backwater, third rate independent league university that had nothing to lose in hiring a twice-caught cheater -- i.e. Fresno State. But, Kentucky? I think we might as well strip Kentucky of all its previous championships just because they decided to associate themselves with that slimeball.

I had dinner last week with two KY grads - both rabid fans of the basketball program. They are thrilled with the Calipari hiring and couldn't care less about his baggage. Thrilled. I don't know if they are typical of the KY faithful, but something tells me they are. Maybe they are typical of fans in general. Don't we all view people differently once they put on our team's colors? It's easy to tell ourselves "things will be different this time"..

Bob Knight is an idiot.
John Calipari can't possibly be expected to be held accountable for flagrant NCAA violations that happened at two programs coincidentally while he happened to be running those programs. That's ridiculous. What, is Calipari supposed to be strictly monitoring as opposed to subtly encouraging these types of things the whole time he is in charge?? Please.
The fact that Bob Knight was able to run a clean program at Indiana for 30 years while winning three NCAA championships (and also racking up 900 wins over his entire coaching career) gives this man no right to call out another coach who has no moral or ethical compass whatsoever.
Bob Knight should burn in hell for saying these types of things about another coach. I'm appalled.

Love the fact that he is employed by ESPN and actually calls games, but still had the cajones to speak out and specifically identify Calipari. What a rarity at ESPN.

What's the definition of insanity again? I think kidding oneself has gotten a bad rap. Things go along so nicely when you're delusional.

While it obviously won't happen - I would pay huge money to go watch Knight call a game at Rupp this year. That would make the demonstrations at the Climate Change conference look like child's play. Guess UK is now stuck with Dickie V for the duration. On second thought maybe that was Knight's punishment for Calipari all along ;D

Every so often Knight is correct.
This is one.

These guys aren't wearing rose colored glasses, they're wearing an entire rose colored body shield. But you're right, coach, that is human nature, even if an extreme example.

Please do not impugn a very tasty seafood dish (which is much better broiled than fried BTW, if you've never had it that way) by associating it with that repugnant coach.

Bob Knight is so awesome that he got away with those loud plaid jackets he wore throughout the 70's and 80's. The Calipari call-out is just more evidence.

Calipari responds: sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=4755172___________________________________________ Love the fact that he is employed by ESPN and actually calls games, but still had the cajones to speak out and specifically identify Calipari. What a rarity at ESPN. Agree. It's particularly refreshing since Dick Vitale and Calipari have conspicuously traded donations to certain charitable organizations for on-air plaudits in recent years.

Generally speaking, all it takes is some srious charitable donations or a horrible death to make everyone forget you ran renegade programs for most of your career. See Valvano, James

I agree completely with knight and love that he said this. But there has to be some resentment there where he thinks jipped that he got lambasted in the press for years and years for actions, he thinks, arent as bad as Calipari's (or are just as bad) but cal gets to be paid millions and coach the #3 team

Seth Davis fires back at Knight. Says Knight should be as tough on himself Knight as he is on others, pointing to Knight's behavior as head coach, alto to his credit Knight never afoul of NCAA. Also pointed out that Knight had facts wrong. UMass/Memphis not on probation but had Final Four appearances vacated. Technical point, but true.

Is Seth now carrying water for Cal? Or is he still smarting from Knight describing Duke's defense as "flopping"?
