Wow. Seems like some guys are destined to suffer injury after injury.

I said the same thing about E.J. Henderson last night.

Sam Bowie all over again. That was the first guy I thought of when I saw this. Also, I think it's more than just bad luck. I think especially tall people are more prone to injury. I just don't think the body is made to take the wear and tear that we give it and the taller and larger the player is, the more demand on the body. I do think that is a factor.

This is just a bloody shame. I compared Greg to Bowie on the other board. I'm no doctor (I'm only married to one), but I don't think I agree with your hypothesis, hifi. Bowie and now Oden seem to be unusual cases. I can't remember any other big men who seemed to have this problem to this extent (keeping fingers crossed on Andrew Bynum). Just to pick a couple cases, I don't recall Kareem or Parish ever being seriously injured (except when Kareem broke his hand punching Kent Benson, which doesn't count, since it was a self-inflicted injury).

This is a shame. I didn't like playing against him, and I sure didn't like when he bowled over a stationary Jeff AND got the blocking call rather than the charge.
...But that being said, he seemed like a good guy. Definitely never seemed full of himself or anything. Hopefully he gets on the floor eventually and at least gets a few good years of play.

Bynum is an almost perfect analogue. He also had injuries to both knees early on, I believe.
There's good reason to believe that Oden can come back. There's no ligament damage and the injury is a bit freakish, not necessarily the result of wear.
That said, he also could be injury prone.

At least he didn't break his back. Ouch.
