I would not jump to conclusions about how he got hepatitis B and insinuate some sort of bad behavior on the part of the kid. In most of the world, the most common way to acquire hepatitis B is at birth from a mother who is a carrier and does not know it. HSB is correct that hepatitis B is acquired by blood exposure - this can also be through blood transfusion, needlestick exposures including tattoo needles that are improperly sterilized, and sexual exposure. The reports also don't say whether it is acute or chronic. www.cdc.gov/hepatitis/B/index.htm

Not really a joking matter. I hope it's acute for the kid's sake in which case he could be fine in a couple of weeks.

There are many ways yarou could've gotten Hep B 56% of cases have no known risk factor. I'm assuming that since he only recently came over from Africa, that that's why he hadn't had the vaccine. And even if it's only accute he could still be out 6 months with just that.

I wish him a full and complete recovery ......though I wouldn't mind if, in the process of getting healthy, he mysteriously and Space Jammishly lost all hand-eye coordination.

If he played for the Cuse? I think you just found the perfect example of moral dilemma. If he played for Cuse, I'd probably wish it would spread to his teammates but I think I'd feel a little bad about that.

Bad news for Nova. Sorry for the kid; not for the coach and school.
