Sure, why the hell not.
The Olympic tennis competition has become pretty prestigious with the players, hasn't it? It's not up there with majors, but it's more important than, say, Legg Mason. I think the same could happen for golf, absolutely.
If it's going to attract the best players, then sure. The only thing I'd worry about is scheduling, because I'd hate for the Olympics to interfere with the President's or Ryder Cups, or events like the Tour Championship. I'm sure the PGA and other governing bodies will accommodate the Olympics though. [EDIT: Actually, thinking about it, I'd love for golf to have an individual stroke play tournament AND a team match play competition in the Olympics, eventually].
Rugby I am far less familiar with -- particularly with the different formats, like 7s (someone else can comment on whether that is good or bad)-- but it seems to be a pretty popular international sport, if not one here in the US, so go ahead. It'll be fun to watch.
I am all for including sports that involve scoring by athletes and teams and NOT by judges.
The more judged sports -- including some of the ridiculous X-Games style nonsense -- we can get rid of, the happier I will be.
And a tangentially related subject...how long does everyone think it will be before MMA is an Olympic sport?

All for it. I imagine golf will eventually settle into where the Olympics are in the ranking in tennis -- below a grand slam but above jsut about anything else. I'd love to see a team component in golf. If we have rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline, pretty much everything else should be in.

As far as rugby goes, 7s is not the classic form of the game and it does not draw the top talent from the traditional rugby powers, but it does seem to have gained popularity in more places, especially Asia and the Pacific Islands. It is also less physically punishing, so it is possible to play multiple matches at a high level over a short time span. XV's rugby is as grueling as American football, and trying to play more than one match/week forces teams to carry 40 men and have effectively two sides.
7's is a sprint, the games are much shorter and the collisions are less frequent or violent, so it is not a bad event for the Olympics, and it might even attract a few stars from the XV's world who want a shot at gold. The Rugby World Cup, like FIFA's, will continue to be the premiere competition for most of the elite players though.

There is a groundswell of support for a new "media only" sport of Obama tonsil hockey. Chris Matthews the early favorite for gold, silver and bronze as he has demanded multiple entries.

The olympics should be reserved for sports I never watch normally. I want more speed walking, curling, biathlon, etc. Rugby? Golf? Yawn. I see that all the time.

Personally, I'm stoked to see rugby in the olympics. Golf .... well that'll be cool too.

Rugby Sevens should be fun to watch. As Jack said, the Rugby World Cup will always be the top event for traditional 15 man rugby, but the Olympics could become the top Sevens sport in the world.
Sevens is also a much more global form of rugby. The full version of the sport is pretty much dominated by a handful of traditional rugby nations, and no outsider has ever really broken into the top ranks of the sport (although Argentina may do so at some point). It's also an opportunity for smaller Pacific nations like Fiji to get their moment in the Olympic spotlight.

Curling and the Biathlon are awesome. So was the modern pentathlon before they killed it.
However, many of the summer obscure sports suck, period. Mostly in gymnastics.

Tell me that wasn't the coolest part of winter games on the sega? Oh man, misunderstanding. I ABSOLUTELY waste hours of life (though I don't consider it wasted) watching curling, biathlon, pretty much every track event, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, etc. I was booing you for yawning at rugby!

On this topic, the award for most random collection of sports in one event has to be modern pentathlon. Where else in the wide, wide world of sports would you ever combine: *Pistol Shooting *Epee Fencing *200m Free Swim *Show Jumping (equestrian), and *a 3km Cross-Country Run other than, ya know, to escape from the evil forces of Cardinal Richelieu www.movievillains.com/images/richelieu.jpg

Can we create new and better combinations? Can we just add the steeplechase to various other events? Why isn't there a jousting event? Horseback archery?

I think we should have a sport where competitors get inside spherical steel cages and try to push opponents into certain designated areas of the field of play for points.
And some sort of quarterstaff fight over a pool of water. Though, to protect the athletes, we may want to have the competitors helmeted and the quarterstaves padded in some manner.
Perhaps a twist on the rings in gymnastics, where the athletes don't just perform on two rings, but instead attempt to cross a field of play lined with hundreds of hanging rings while opponents seek to impede their progress.
Now these are some Olympic sports I'd watch!
;D
(But seriously, horseback archery would be awesome.)
