It's in giant 75-point red, I guess he couldn't fit the siren in.

The good news is that Valerie Jarrett is SOL. Guess all that "Kumbaya", "We are the World" horse manure Obama has been selling isn't working.

Democrat, Republican, you could have brought Mount Rushmore to the meeting and it wouldn't have mattered. Samaranch called in his minions and the voters responded, sending Madrid to the finals. Wait until Comcast/NBC decides not to hand over a big check to the IOC, then they'll panic.

Of course, inasmuch as there is nothing big doing at home right now, early fall in Copenhagen probably looked like a swell junket. It was probably a really nice place for Michelle to shop as well.

It's sort of a damned-if-you-do / damned-if-you-don't situation. Had Obama not went, there would have been tremendous second-guessing as to whether his presence could have sealed the deal.

No scorn for the US media yet? The story from practically every media outlet in the nation over the past 72 hours has been either "Chicago and Rio neck-and-neck" or "Chicago's got 2016 in the bag already."

I agree, but I am still surprised that he was willing to stick his neck out there without having something in the bag. Pretty embarrassing. But, as others have stated, Samaranch and the IOC are just plain vile.

Obama vs. Samaranch. Hard to pick a villain, but easy to see the winner. Naive idealist gets rolled by experienced intenational player.

In my opinion, it was just beneath the Presidency to do this. But I'm sure if he hadn't, people would definitely be asking that question today. In any case, I guess the speculation that it was in the bag was about as off base as possible. Have the announced the winner yet? I think either Rio or Madrid are cool places to host. I guess sentimentally, I'd be more for Madrid, but either is fine with me.

Rio makes the most sense - First time in Southern Hemisphere in our part of the world and Brazil is like China last time - the emerging power coming on the world stage.
Why Obama got involved in this is beyond me. No win and the juxtaposition of him going to Olympics (with apparantly Michelle taking a shopping vacation in Paris) versus new jobless stats is not what he needs right now to put it mildly.

I've never been to Rio, but isn't August basically the late winter for them? What's the weather going to be like?

The story from practically every media outlet in the nation over the past 72 hours has been either "Chicago and Rio neck-and-neck" or "Chicago's got 2016 in the bag already." You almost have to feel sorry for the poor media. It's quite obvious that CNN (I don't know about MSNBC or Fox) has no programming scheduled for this afternoon. How long can they show the empty stage where some band obviously isn't going to perform?

Can I take a second for a brief side-rant here? No reason it's in this thread in particular, just random. Is anyone else getting really annoyed at this trend on a lot of Web sites to have their audio or (more likely) video automatically begin playing when you load a page? ESPN is one of the worst offenders, of course, but it is becoming increasingly prevalent on a lot of sites. Hey, I'm a capitalist, all right? I have no problem with advertising in principle. Doesn't mean I can't get screen-shatteringly annoyed with its methods. In the end, it's nothing new, really. First it was annoying MIDI files playing when you went to some yutz's Web page with dancing toasters on it. Then it was pop-up ads. Then pop-under ads. And many other iterations of the same idea. This is just one of the newer ones, and it [deleted]es me off to no end. This one bugs me just a little bit more because I haven't yet figured out a way to disable it, if one even exists. Anyway, brief rant over. Please resume discussion. Where were we? I think Obama was bribing the IOC or something, wasn't he? ;D This is exactly the reason I left MySpace. Or, this.

Doesn't Chicago basically try to kill off all its seniors with blistering heat waves every summer though?
The Rio weather sounds great by comparison.

At least Barry O won't have to worry about "marching into Chicago next to Rahm Emanuel, Valerie Jarrett and Richard Daley to declare the Chicago Olympics open" as the failed ex-President he'll be by 2016.
