The only reason to get the Olympics, in my view, is to get the infrastructure improvements that come along with it. Suddenly every project that's been put off for years is suddenly green lit. Those improvements can do a lot to help people out once the games are gone. Exactly and this is why I really hope we get it. I also think it will be a pretty cool thing to experience with my son who will be old enough to really get it in 2016. I think the IOC would love to find a way to give it to Rio but are afraid of the risk and will go to Chicago for more of a sure thing. Yeah, but wouldn't you rather take your son to Rio or Madrid?

When he's 21, not 9.

Like those shopping trips at the Waldorf-Astoria someone made up during the campaign? Wow, you find a stereotype and just stick with it, huh?

The accusation is particularly rich in light of President Bush's imploring of the public to shop after 9/11.

I think the Chicago bid actually has the lowest government price tag. The plan is for the government to pay for the infrastructure upgrades, while private sector funds pay for the Games themselves.
And this isn't the slam dunk most people are saying it is. Non-American media say it's basically a toss-up, and most of it will depend on how strictly the IOC follows its unofficial rotation policy. Rio has the weakest bid on paper, but South America has never hosted the Olympics before. Madrid is probably the strongest on paper, but the IOC might not want to have three straight games in Europe (2012 London, 2014 Sochi, 2016).

When ESPN has a few articles questioning it, can we agree it might not be the best idea and not just a partisan one? Sure - having the Olympics has both advantages and disadvantages. That doesn't mean there aren't people attacking it on a purely partisan basis (Fox News, Drudge, Malkin, etc).

Can I take a second for a brief side-rant here? No reason it's in this thread in particular, just random. Is anyone else getting really annoyed at this trend on a lot of Web sites to have their audio or (more likely) video automatically begin playing when you load a page? ESPN is one of the worst offenders, of course, but it is becoming increasingly prevalent on a lot of sites. Hey, I'm a capitalist, all right? I have no problem with advertising in principle. Doesn't mean I can't get screen-shatteringly annoyed with its methods. In the end, it's nothing new, really. First it was annoying MIDI files playing when you went to some yutz's Web page with dancing toasters on it. Then it was pop-up ads. Then pop-under ads. And many other iterations of the same idea. This is just one of the newer ones, and it [deleted]es me off to no end. This one bugs me just a little bit more because I haven't yet figured out a way to disable it, if one even exists. Anyway, brief rant over. Please resume discussion. Where were we? I think Obama was bribing the IOC or something, wasn't he? ;D

Otherwise known as the reason I never, ever, ever go to the Gtown Athletic Dept. Website. 2) There are a couple of firefox extensions that block auto play. Here's one I found: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1765

Actually, you know what grinds my gears? Links that take you to video and/or audio.
I can read text faster, and I can do other things while reading. I have to listen and watch video and give it my undivided attention.
Really, CNN, give me a paragraph as to why the kid got kicked out of his elementary school graduation! Are you saying you can't just write a stupid paragraph? Is that it? Can't write at all?
And that, everyone, is what grinds my gears.

I noticed that too - if you click on any of the GUHoyas emails you get some football or soccer kid yelling at you to come out to the game this weekend. Annoying because it is so in your face. The worst is when you click over into another application as the video is buffering and you can't figure out why the Women's Lacrosse Team is giving you a season preview.

Wow, he's even less successful abroad than at home. Too bad, sounds like his family's sacrifice went for naught.
Clearly it's all Drudge's fault.

I'm watching the live broadcast of NBC Chicago. Honestly, the dumbest newscast I've ever seen.
Some highlights: Anchorwoman: "Do you think that people pushed the wrong button?" Anchorman: "We may never know what the vote totals will be", except the IOC spokesman said that after the voting concluded, the entire round-by-round totals would be released.
