Another media giant passes. Hewitt directed the first evening television newscast at the age of 25, was the producer for Ed Murrow's "See It Now", produced the Kennedy-Nixon debate (1960), and created 60 Minutes, where he virtually created the newsmagazine format and served there for 32 years.
Perhaps the only person at CBS that could have ever balanced the talents and egos of Wallace, Safer, et al. and still make it a top rated show for two generations.
