I feel like the deal is more valuable for the Nats for the public image and as a symbol that they're actually willing to spend money on a big-time--if unproven--player, and arguably on future team success, than it is for the change in W/L associated with Strasburg signing on.
Given their recent run of success on the field (albeit against teams in the bottom of the NL), the signing provides an opportunity to continue the sense of positive momentum, whereas a failure to lock Strasburg in would wipe out any benefit of recent wins.
Instead, if the Nats can play .500 ball for the rest of the season (they've been playing over .650 in their last 26), they'll avoid 100 losses, probably won't wind up with the worst record in the majors, and might actually generate some excitement for next season.

Why would they want to do that, and miss out on the chance to pay $20 million to the next really enormous thing, NV HS C Bryce Harper, already a SI coverboy?

As someone who collected all of Ben McDonald's rookie cards (no joke), I think the Nats overpaid.

"TINSTAAPP" Sincerely, Mark Prior If the Nats get the equivalent of Mark Prior's first 4 professional seasons out of this deal (613.1 IP of 3.24 ERA, 10.55 K/9, 1.19 WHIP, 3.69 K/BB ball) they are doing spectacularly. And if they don't hire Dusty Baker to manage him they may get a few more good years after that, too.
