OK, sometimes I criticize the over-erudition of the NY Times--I'm not exactly their target audience. Maybe it's because one shouldn't read articles and wonder if the late William F. Buckley was the copy editor. (Example: this weekend's NYT magazine story variously drops in words such as mise-en-scène, rolfing, simulacrum and transubstantiation..and it's about cooking.) So for fun, the Nieman Center at Harvard tracked the 50 most looked up words from Times articles in 2009. I'll admit I knew of only 30 or 31 of them.
