Take a look at some of these lines: "Thunderstorms Appear to Stymie Turnout in Va. Race" "Voters across Virginia braved thunder, wind and heavy rain to head for the polls today" "Bad weather appeared to be causing only minor issues across the state" "soaking rain, hail, thunder and lightning affected conditions and led the National Weather Service to urge people to stay indoors" "As the weather improved through the morning, turnout often didn't...." Surely, these are competing accounts of the situation in Virginia today, right? NO! All from the same story! Well done, WP! I turn to you for my schizophrenia. ;D On a more serious note, I'll be voting for McDonnell in the fall, so I guess I am pulling for Moran to win the primary. Deeds is a better GE candidate and McAuliffe, while I don't think he's a great candidate (and think he would be a horrible governor), would probably be able to raise a nigh endless supply of money for the fall (none of it from Virginians, but still). At least Brian Moran isn't a dirty old letch like his older brother.

The good thing for the GOP about McDonnell running unopposed is that he didn't have to run ads to appeal to his party's base. One candidate - I think it's Deeds - has TV ads which praise him for "defending a woman's right to choose" and something about gun restrictions. That creates a fun paper trail for the general election.

McAuliffe's campaign seems to be playing turnout games today - the obligatory release of "yesterday's internals" and talk of how "we like what we see today." I am not sure that I buy into it. More likely that this will be Deeds-McDonnell.
More thunderstorms on the way as polls close this evening.

Deeds slaughtered Moran and McAuliffe. Get ready for a brutal, high-dollar fight on what should probably be the best race in the fall (yes, NJ's governorship is up for grabs, but they're reliably blue - Virginia switched and should be a partial bellweather on how Democrats and Republicans are perceived).

The (ugh!) Washington Post endorsement of Deeds was at least partially responsible for the blowout. As a pro-gun Democrat, it will be interesting to see how that plays out in Northern Virginia.

This really won't be a gun issue - the fight will be in Northern Virginia, and the issues will be the economy and education. Convince the households in Fairfax, Loudoun or Prince William with two teenagers that you can help solve the economic concerns and ensure that their kids will go to a good college and not be in debt until they're 70, and you'll win in November.

Warner, Kaine, and Webb were all pro-gun, right? I didn't stop them from winning NoVa. It's a little more complicated with Deeds. He was trying to play both sides of the gun rights issue during the primary. Obviously he was successful, since he won, but it could be problematic for him in the general election. Having said that, gun rights are really not going to be the issue, or even a major issue in this election. Oh, I'm sure McDonnell will try to take advantage of some of the contradictions Deeds has made during the primaries in this respect, but that's really not going to be a determining factor, IMO. EDIT: sorry, forgot to add what I think WILL be the issue in the fall. I think it's fairly clear that it will be taxes. Maybe with a related topic of transportation funding. This, of course, is assuming the candidates stay focused on issues.....and no, I'm not taking bets on the likelihood of that.

New Jersey's race is going to be extraordinarily competitive as well. Maybe not as nationally "bell weather worthy," but I think most of that stuff is stupid and overblown anyhow.

Yeah, I tend to think the economy and transportation are going to be the big issues. I forget where I read it today, but someone was saying that McDonnell's strategy is going to be to stick to these issues, while the Dems are going to try to get him to stray from them. We'll see what happens, I guess.

Rasmussen has Deeds ahead 47-41 in its post-primary poll. A definite bounce there - McConnell had polled ahead of all Dem challengers.
You'll probably see some of the bounce go away and a tight race around Labor Day.
