What should we do with his scoloarship. Do we add someone late of do we wait till 2010. I say lets fill needs now and not wait for later. We could be real dangerous next year.

We need to get a couple more players for next year. We have eight scholarship players right now, no backup PG (especially if Clark starts) and a somewhat thin frontline that gets thinner next year.

With the down economy, we save the $45K. With five open scholarships, the program is starting out up 225K even if we implode at the end of the year. We are following corporate America and downsizing to a nimble eight man squad that operates at higher efficiency so we can compete like we have thirteen scholarship players.
We bring in alumni for free to help with practice and BAM!!!! Mo money!!!

The main focus has always been to have 4 schollies for 2010.

Is Omar transferring or did I miss something? Why are we speculating about his schollie?

Get Latavious. And pray that Wright can average 38 minutes a game next season or that Clark's handle greatly improves.

Save it for 2010. It works out perfectly we take two more this year and then we have wattad's acholarship to take on a 3rd player in 2010 along with starks and lubick and then a 4th will open because monroe will probably go or someone else will transfer so we'll have the 4 2010 scholarships we wanted.

Now you have a tight eight man rotation next year - Chris, Austin, Hollis, Henry and Greg with Jason, Nikita and Julian coming off the bench. Everybody plays a lot but there isn't much room for fouls or if somebody gets hurt. A true center or another banger would help ease the burden next season.

U r absolutely right. Bring in two more players, a banger and a pg. Latavious of course and the guy with the best handle we can get. That way everyone has a serviceable backup that can come in and get minutes. Starters: Monroe, Sims, Thompson, Freeman, Wright Backups: Vaughn, Williams, Nikita, Clark, backup pg Also, Williams could back up Thompson or Sims to ensure he gets enough PT. Not sure what his perimeter game is like tho so that is just wishful thinking.

I know of someone who is currently enrolled at South Carolina, and is dying to play college basketball. This kid can play with anyone and everyone. He ran circles around the entire South Carolina basketball team, but declined an invitiation to play because he didn't want to stay there all four years. He is from South Carolina. He might be one of the best basketball players I have ever seen play. He is a little undersized, but dominates the post. Did I mention he dunked over 4 kids today and broke the basket at the same time?

I don't know why, but Bruce's version of John Henry popped into my head while I was reading this post.

Actually, I'm changing my response. Forget Latavious, let's take the money and get campus-wide wireless.

I actually disagree with this a bit. Firstly I think it depends on whos out there and interested, but that sort of goes without saying. I know a lot of people have been saying that we want 4 for 2010 and that's the plan and such. Well, to me, unless we are going to get another big guy to put next to Nate in 2010, and as of right now the big guys on the radar for 2010 are pretty scarce, I don't think we need 4 scholarships for 2010. Basically, I don't think we need 2 wings in 2010, especially if one of the scholarships we use this offseason for 2009 is for a combo who can help at shooting guard (Sanford, Rahon maybe). Because honestly I think the shooting guard spot is on lock the next few years. Clark is going to be excellent (I am higher on him than most), not to mention 2 more years of Freeman. If one of the 'ships is a combo guard--and that combo guard will struggle to get PT at point beyond next year with Starks coming in to understudy Wright--then I think the shooting guard minutes are pretty much spoken for for the next few years. Anybody who we bring in in 2010 isn't going to get a ton of PT at shooting guard, at least not early. So that leaves Small forward. Oh, wait, we just GOT a highly-regarded SF in 2009. And we've got a serviceable bench guy with some experience (Nikita). SO, I'm not against getting 1 wing in 2010, in fact that's what we should do be it Barton, Smith, Ross, whomever. But I think if we bring in 2 of those, in addition to Clark, Freeman, Thompson, a reserve we add this offseason and Nikita, I don't see there being nearly enough minutes for 2 wings in 2010. To summarize, unless we're going to get a wing+a big in 2010, I don't see a need for 2 scholarships that year. If we're just after the best available wing, we only need 1 'ship, and that will free up with Greg. Under that assumption, I think we have 3 to play with this offseason. I for one would like to see us go hard after Alan Chaney. He can't contribute next year but he will be nice to have in practice and I think he'll be a good big to have in our rotation for the 3 years after that. Can never have too many bigs. I'd use one of the others on Sanford if they think he can contribute next year, otherwise maybe Rahon to be a shooting specialist the following year. The last one I'd keep until the Latavious Williams situation works out--hopefully it'd be his, if not we could weigh either giving it to a project player like Sirin or Olasewere, or keep it and hope for the best in 2010. The downside to keeping it in that scenario is that our active roster for next year would be really small, and if we had injuries we'd be in some trouble, so I'd probably give it to the next best forward if LW fell through.
