Seriously, a thread gets locked for violating the rumor police's rules despite the fact that it stems from and cites a major sports news contributor? That really is ridiculous. This site had been getting closer and closer to worthless already but that pretty much seals it. Next thing you know we'll get some edict that we are not to discuss anything until JTIII personally whispers it softly into the admin's ear. C'mon Joseph Breen...Professor Umbridge...cut out out the power trip. Otherwise, I hope people start leaving this site in droves.
Do some folks not read the request on this board not to comment on transfers unless announced by GU? For the sake of a family that is considering a transfer, let them be the ones to communicate this, not a blog. There have been circumstances over the years where Georgetown players were all but gone in the press and chose not to do so, and others that were gone from the start that no one guessed, but we simply ask that people hold their fire until something is official and that source is GUHoyas.com. A blog does not qualify. If you have complaints or suggestions, PM me directly. I'll answer each and every one of you. --Admin

I've been visiting this board for over ten years and it has always been sensitive about rumors and speculations. So at least the folks running it have been consistent. It doesn't matter who the coach is.

It doesn't matter who the coach is. That is true MCI, and I agree with you and with the Admin of the board the vast majority of the time. But I don't recall a prohibition about noting that a major news organization is reporting something. Once the cat is out of the bag, seems the rules are pretty irrelevant at that point.

not trying to start a controversy or be a trouble maker but I am gona have to agree with daymondmyles's complaint here....I am glad that rumors and unsubstantiated claims aren't allowed but someone did cite a specific article with specific evidence....should that really have been locked? I guess it was said that it has to be from the school but still.... i duno if everyone else thinks otherwise then so be it...

I recall there being plenty of discussion of Brandon Bowman's potential transfer after it was reported by the Post after his sophomore year, and I don't remember there being any confirmation from TASS, er, Sports Information. I echo the others who generally agree with the prohibition on rumor-mongering but wonder why people cannot discuss this situation now that it has been reported by a reputable source. Not a big deal, but there ain't much else going on.

I would just remind everyone that this is a private board, run by a small number of people. They "own" the board, they run, and they maintain it. They are free to make any rules they wish, and we are free to not visit the board if we wish.
Rumors have no place on the board, but sometimes the rules can be a little strictly enforce, Ill give you that. However, i accept that i am only a client of the board, not its "owner." The rules are take it or leave it. It is fairly easy to start your own board and you can have any rules you want.

jgalt I think people are being rather reasonable in their critique....no one (so far) has accused the Admins of being completely gestapo-like or saying overly harsh things. I think this is a valid thing to bring up...I personally really appreciate the work the Admins do on this board and agree that they make the rules and we have to live by them but I think something like this should be allowed to be discussed without dismissing it by saying "if you don't like it don't come"
and for the record I'm not overly concerned with the issue I just think it is a valid discussion point that's all

I just wanted to put that out there so everyone has that when they are discussing things. I think open discussion would be a good way to resolve this problem. I hope it works

Agree with others. If it's been reported by an actual source--I know it's fox, but it still counts--then I don't see why it can't be discussed. Sure, in the odd situation the news source may get it wrong, but it's no longer unsubstantiated.
And it's definitely true that this board is a private institution and therefore, can set the rules. But that doesn't mean that we as members of it cannot discuss or criticize the rules. Just like the owners are free to ignore us.

Obviously this board is owned and run by people who are not just average readers or posters, but I think the whole "if you don't like it, don't come" argument is a little unfair. For somebody like me who a) is really into the team and b) doesn't have the money (especially as a undergrad) to pay for a rivals or other subscription, this board, being free, is my primary source for team news.
I'm sure this is the same deal for many, many others, meaning that HoyaTalk is more that just a board, it's the primary source for information for avid followers of the team. Meaning if we want to keep up to date on all team info, we do have to come here. HoyaTalk is not just a talk board, but a news source for many, and I think should be thought of partly as such. It isn't just as easy as "if you don't like it, then just leave" if you want to follow the team closely.

Two weeks ago the admins had to deal with those two crazy days where a new major player was going to transfer in every thread. So I think they are just being more cautious, because this board is almost like a ticking time bomb when it comes to rumors lately.

OK, so the ridiculous speculation from two weeks ago has calmed down. And we all know that Omar is leaving. Let's stop being ridiculous. It is covered by an objective news source! Admin doesn't need to do the eye rolling and acting like we're children just for someone posting a LINK to a SOURCE that said something we were all PM'ing about last week anyway.
We took the transfer speculation off the board on Admin's request. But I always thought the rule is that you had to link to a source. That rule was met this time. So why lock it?
See the Admin's comment in the first post in this thread, posted at 0:50 this morning.

I thought this site has always been "worthless" (free) - how can anyone not be getting their money's worth? Thanks to the guys who run & police this site for all their efforts.
