Second-Year Coach Has Princeton in Thick of Ivy RaceEXCERPTS Johnson might not have promised a quick fix, but he has delivered one. Picked to finish last in the league this season in a news media poll, the Tigers will begin a three-game stretch at Columbia on Friday that will decide whether they win their first Ivy title since 2004.
Johnson’s success most likely has something to do with his personality. He is low-key and often reserved, a sharp contrast to Scott, who had the reputation of being a taskmaster who clashed with several of his players.
Princeton got off to a 2-8 start this season and entered 2009 with a six-game losing streak. With the season looking bleak, the Tigers won their next seven games, a streak that included a 20-point victory against Cornell. They have gone 3-4 since, but have won their last two games. Johnson attributes the ups and downs to inexperience.
Perhaps the odds are against Princeton: the Tigers need to win three consecutive road games to have a chance at the league title and a berth in the N.C.A.A. tournament. But it’s March and Princeton is about to play some important games. Even a few months ago, that did not seem possible.
Congratulations and best of luck to former Hoya Asst. and JT3 pal Sydney Johnson, who has successfully returned the Princeton Offense to its birthplace.
