I know "clutter"--but this is specifically to thank him for his time at Georgetown and wishing him the best in future. I send same sentiments to Bryon Jansen but his role on team was different, so here's my top Jessie Sapp Moments and contribute your own in the thread as a show of thanks for his time as a Hoya!
FROSH YEAR---
Saw Jessie play and something about him made you know he would be a contributor. He wasn't afraid and always seemed to be in middle of action and competing hard. Then he developed a knack for making shots that "got team over hump" late in season--specifically the BET and NCAA's. The 2 games I remember him hitting big shots that year:--
BET against Marquette that was shot that gave Hoyas lead they didn't give up.
NCAA's against Northern Iowa--a deep 3 and team never looked back.
His shot against UNI meant a lot as it helped team advance to face Ohio State--where they put on a clinic which gave me the first opportunity to see the Hoyas in person for first time in Sweet 16. Sadly, Jessie's little sister was shot and that put his participation in perspective--but he stuck with team and gave it his all--which I think sums him up--effort.
SOPHOMORE SEASON:
In a year that brought back Hoyas back to Elite and provided so many new memories/fans, Jessie Sapp played a key part--stepping into the Starting Lineup. He was sharing the backcourt with Jon Wallace--and really did a great job of blending together and playing off each other well. That shifted Jessie from SG to Ball handler a lot in halfcourt--and in a year of so many great memories-the ones that stood out to me:
His backcourt heave before half at Nova.
Standing toe to toe with Jared Dudley and not letting Hoyas get punked.
His minutes in 2nd Half of East Regional Final--where he basically was Hoyas scoring and kept team in contact of UNC and it eventually led to the great comeback/getting Georgetown back to Final Four!!!
In tough loss in Semis--he was one of the few guys on offense that hit some shots-including a 3 to give Hoyas their only lead in 2nd Half.
JUNIOR SEASON:
I think Sapp's finest in terms of hitting some HUGE shots and best examples of what he is--a guy who battles/fights until it's over.
Some of the biggest moments:
1. WVU Shot---his 3 to win that game in a stretch of season the team was struggling to score-he stepped up and hit the shot to set up "The Block".
2. UCONN Game--everyone remembers the Hibbert 3--but Sapp scored 7 points with Hoyas down 6 and under 3 minutes to go to get the game to point Roy could do his thing.
3. Syracuse Game--Sapp took over down stretch and scored 9 straight points and that helped force OT--where Hoyas prevailed.
4. Nova BET Game--his 3pt play the conventional way ended a Nova rally--which saw them comeback from large deficit, take the lead, and then Sapp's shot/FT started a run where Hoyas took over game and Jessie was unreal from deep.
5. Sapp was outstanding for most of the BET last year as well.
6. Jessie hitting a 3 to give Hoyas one last shot to hang in game against Davidson--although it didn't end up as we all would've liked--he had that knack to step up late in game and nail a shot.
SENIOR YEAR:
Everyone would like fairytale, happy endings to their athletic careers, but it doesn't always end how you expect. It doesn't mean you failed--just doesn't happen for whatever reason and up to this point--it's not been a great year for anyone on the team. There have been some tough losses, and as the only SR who is in rotation--Jessie had to lead, and take on a new role. With games left-you can't write the final chapter--so here's hoping to one last great run starting tomorrow and ending next weekend. If that doesn't happen---here's to one last push to get Jessie back to NYC for the NIT Championship which would end his career in his hometown and kickstart the rest of team's '10 season. Moments Jessie has stood out this year:
1. His 3pt shot to silence UConn's run in the biggest Hoya win of season to date. That killed their spirit and sealed the game as Hoyas closed it out with ease and it was a "Sapp Shot"--the get over hump, we're going to be fine moment you came to expect from him.
2. His game at Nova didn't result a huge scoring game-but he had the hoop when team was struggling off the pass from Greg Monroe, and his defense/steals and leadership were off the charts in that game. He was really spearheading the team and first guy up clapping/supporting teammates.
3. Memphis game--seeing him so fired up at end of the OT Win and throwing in that circus shot as he was heading towards student section is what CBB is about.
4. Taking Grevis Vasquez completely out of the game in Orlando.
Nothing else needs to be said.
As a Hoya fan, I think it's important to know that players/coaches realize that despite the ups and downs, the wins/losses, we all have them to thank for providing enjoyment and escape from our lives and I want to thank them--but on this day especially Jessie and Bryon for their effort/time at Georgetown. I don't know them personally and can't say I know any Hoya coach/player personally, but I am PROUD to call myself a Hoya fan because of the type of people they are---and players second. I said it a week ago in a thread, but these young men can teach us about maturity and handling tough losses and being humble in winning. They are excellent representatives for their families, their University, and no matter what happens for the 4 years they peform on the court for Hoyas--they deserve our gratitude.
THANK YOU JESSIE AND BRYON and GOOD LUCK IN YOUR FUTURES!!!
