Is there a reason this woman shouldn't go to jail? No income. No job. On disability (HOW DISABLED CAN SHE BE?! SHE CARRIED 8 KIDS!) No plan. No significant other. Sorry, but this just enraged me. She seems like the most wildly irresponsible person I've heard of in a long time.

She's irresponsible, but by no means should she be put in jail for having children. This is America, after all. If she can't live up to her end of "the deal," she'll be punished by children's protective services or whatever they call it out there. Now the doctor who implanted all those embryos? I'm no in vitro expert, but it seems to me he needs to have his credentials questioned, if not suspended... or worse. Yeah, she cant really be sent to jail, she hasnt really done anything criminal (i guess you could argue child endangerment but it doesnt sound if her other six children were malnourished or mistreated). She may (probably/definately) has mental problems and could, i suppose, be committed, but to force that it has to be shown she is a danger to her self or others right? who ever planted the embryos was definately in the wrong. there is no way that person didnt know the woman had 6 other kids and no job. they should definately loose their license. the worst part of cases like this (i think this is similar to drug addicts who continue to have children with no intent to stop using drugs) is that the people who really get hurt are the kids. they can never be unborn or forgotten about (like say a burned down house or lost money can be). they have to be taken care of. They really are the innocent victims. Finding foster care or adoptions would be a night mare. splitting up siblings (especially identical ones) is never the best, but with 14 kids it is bound to happen. really a sad story

You should need a permit to procreate. If only that didn't grant the govt more power than they should have, I'd be serious. That women is obviously just an overgrown 13 year old girl. At the end of the day that women will pay nothing in taxes over her life and the state will be paying tens of millions of dollars to support her asinine family "plan."

I blame Jon and Kate plus 8. You mean not everyone gets to quit their jobs and take care of their kids full time while moving into a mansion? Hmm, must be a shock for this idiot of a woman.

The doctor should lose his license. Why? For not killing seven of them?

The doctor should lose his license. Why? For not killing seven of them? This isn't an abortion thing. The doctor should lose his liscence for agreeing to implant embryos in a women that clearly had no chance of providing for them. What kind of doctor performs a procedure that guarantees that 8 kids will be on the dole their entire childhood?

What kind of doctor performs a procedure that guarantees that 8 kids will be on the dole their entire childhood? First off, in vitro fertilization should be banned because it usually involves the creation of several embryos that are killed in favor of the "most viable". I don't care if it may allow some who cannot conceive to bear children; from my education at Georgetown, the end does not justify the means. Second, why should the doctor have any say whether or not to implant eight or six or twelve? I thought the left was always in favor of the woman's right to choose. Isn't this, then, a choice the woman is allowed to make?

I don't think anyone here is saying that he should have made eight viable embryos and then destroyed seven of them.

I heard a comment today on NPR that it is common to only implant TWO embryos maximum at a time when the patient is 35 or older (like the octomom).
if you want to take it to a right to choose thing, i would only say that yes she has the right to choose to want eight embryos or thirty or whatever but the doctor has the right (and responsibility) to refuse. having the right to choose or want something doesnt give you the right to get it, those are separate issues (unless you want to live under socialism where wanting something gives you the right to have it, except that you end up having to destroy your desires because they can never be fulfilled due to backward economic policies and ethical models.) well that went somewhere no one was expecting.

No, no, KC -- actually I travel these United States specifically so that I may advocate for the mass extermination of surplus implanted embryos. My post was in no way a reference to this doctor's failure to follow medical ethics or the guidelines established by the AMA and/or the State of California. Also, I was not referencing the multiple malpractice suits this doctor has faced and continues to face. Nope.
