Let's see: Geithner, Secretary of Treasury, did not pay payroll taxes. Richardson, Commerce nominee, had to withdraw. Daschle, Health and Human Services nominee, did not pay income taxes and wife is a lobbyist. Hillary, Secretary of State, large confilcts of interest due to her husband's foreign activities. Lind, Deputy Secretary of Defense, Obama gave him a waiver on lobbyist past.
Am I picking on President Obama? Yes.
Are these the nominees you would expect from someone who promised a new way of doing business?

Don't these people have accountants to at least help with their taxes? How do people not know by now that this will bite them in the tuckus if they screw it up?
I am disappointed in the same sort of pragmatics first attitude that led to Obama's decision to eschew public campaign financing.
And, for all our sakes, I hope everyone was fully-clothed for the Leibovitz photo shoot.

See where Eric Holder got a free pass too. Maybe he'll name Marc Rich his deputy.

Why does Obama hang on to Daschle's nomination like this?
One word: HUBRIS
I won and I want what I want. Change you can believe in is to recycle another old line hack who's in bed with the very people he is supposed to regulate.

Why does Obama hang on to Daschle's nomination like this? Because you don't embarrass someone like Daschle by pulling the nomination, you let them step down. Same with Richardson.

The last time someone was doing this poor a job of vetting, Sarah Palin ended up the Republican nominee for Vice President.
Has there been a cabinet nominee by Obama that didn't have some kind of big issue?

Still, a lot of nominees with issues. Did Bush or Clinton have this problem (I'm not trying to bait here, just curious)

I hardly think we can say that Hillary had a "problem." There were issues about making sure there were no conflicts of interests w/ Bill's foundation, but I don't think we should frame that as some sort of wrong-doing.

This was never really an issue. It's really more something conservatives are holding onto to use as ammunition should she make any moves that reveal -- or have the appearance of -- conflict of interest.

Here's the history of cabinet nominations - 2 withdrawals is a lot, but the votes on confirmation seem pretty similar to the past. For example, Holder got 75 approval votes, and that pretty high historically for the Attorney General position. www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/cabinettable.pdfWeird thing is that you would think Richardson (who ran for President) and Daschle (both a Rep and a Senator) should have been smooth sailing given that they should have been vetted by the press in the past.

Ronald Reagan supported drastically cutting the federal government in all sorts of ways before he agreed to lead it. In fact, it was his platform.
