Ok gang, so this year for the first time I'm heading south instead of north for Turkey Day, and will be driving south to Charlotte from the DC area. Any thoughts on the best way to travel and best times to travel from seasoned travelers? I'm anticipating that we'll both work on the Wednesday before and therefore leave Wed night after rush. As for when we come back that is somewhat flexible, maybe Sat night or Sun early AM.
I'm used to the NE Corridor and know the ins and outs of that one, but I'm a relative newbie for anything south of DC. Thanks.

South on 95 this Wednesday? Good luck, man.
I don't know if such a thing as "after rush" even exists in that circumstance. Unless, you know, you're talking about midnight.
If at all possible, I'd recommend trying to get half days on Wednesday and leaving at noonish. The traffic might still suck, but at least you won't be driving all night.
I'd anticipate really bad congestion from 2 p.m. on. Especially this year. Gas has gone down while air travel is still very expensive, so I'll bet everyone who is travelling will be driving.

I would suggest you invent a teleporter. Or commandeer a SUPERTRAIN. Or steal a helicopter.

Better to head out 66 to 81, take that south to Roanoke and then hop on 77 from there. While 66 won't be much of a picnic, at least you'll avoid 95 (I got stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic between DC & Richmond a few years back -- added 3 hrs to the trip).

Who do you think we are, Dr. Gridlock? Jeez. (actually, one of my favorite columns in the Post when I was in DC and Ron Shaffer was still writing).
You could take Amtrak, which is currently going for $868 for 2 to leave at 6:30 Wednesday night and arrive at 2:20 in the morning.
Seriously, badger's probably right with going West and down through Roanoke to Charlotte.

Thanks gang. I figured we needed something to fill the post-election void. Look for more banality in the near future .

On the back end, do yourself a favor and travel Saturday. In 1981 I spent eleven hours going from north Jersey back to GU ( a four hour trip) on Sunday after Thanksgiving. I have never traveled on that day since.

I had a walking cast/boot that I kept around just for Thanksgiving train travel...they let old, young and the gimpy on the train first. reduces the stress of the mad dash for seats.

I believe it also works to put you at the front of the line for the "Down" escalator into the afterlife. ;D

Good to know Dan...looks like the mccan family will be investing in family boots before heading to Disney.

I had the reverse a few years ago. I couldn't leave any earlier than rush hour on Tuesday night. Took me 6.5 hours to get to Philadelphia. Over 2 on the Beltway alone, another 2 to get to Delaware and another 2 and change from there. Who thought the Tuesday night before Thanksgiving would be a good time to shut down part of 95 in Delaware?

the areas around where 64 and 81 are the same road as well as where 77 and 81 intersect and are the same road can be a mess on Sunday night, not sure about Tues-Wed.
