We scrimmage every year under JT III, as opposed to games vs. the Latvian All-Stars. Have done it with VT before. It will undoubtedly be closed to the public.
If it is on Saturday, that would explain the HHC open practice being on Friday.

Did select members of the press get to go to this scrimmage last year or was it just practice?

I love the fact that we do this scrimmage every year, and I think VTech is a great opponent. They are usually a fairly physicial and athletic team that will play defense, and they are also fairly well coached. The staff should learn a lot from this scrimmage, as the Hoyas are the more talented team, but are so young with so many moving parts. What a great way to see what various players can do at this point, both in terms of individual execution and team functioning.

I am surprised more teams do not do this, but then again money talks. Scrimmaging another BCS conference opponent versus playing the "xy" all-star team seems to be more valuable to a team's prep for the season. However, schools that have their own arena can schedule these D3 or all-star teams and sell a bunch of tickets so understandably most ADs choose money over better competition for a practice.
I think this actually works to our advantage in many ways.

A closed scrimmage also saves you from an embarrassing loss to a d2 school before the season even starts. I agree with Lic that VT is a good team to face (it seems like kind of a long trip for them, but maybe it allows Coach Greenberg to get a little more recruiting in). Does anyone know if gtown ever returns the games to VT or goes to anyone for a scrimmage?

I'm pretty sure we've been trading home and home scrimmages w/ Tech for a few years now.

Here's the rule by the way. You can have two pre-season games, either: - A closed scrimmage against a D-I opponent
- An open game (you can sell tickets) against a D-II or D-III opponent
You can no longer play against travelling teams at all. It's been banned thanks to Calhoun. Like THB, this is at least our third scrimmage against Tech and we've gone to Tech in the past. I don't know if we're using our other allowed scrimmage.

Nice work, Jimmy C! Way to ruin things for our friends at Fort Hood and Latvian Select by using a player's travel team to openly buy his services.
Calhoun should be on a Bud Light "Real Men of Genius" commercial- "Mr. Openly Paying Recruits Scumbag Yet Celebrated Basketball Coach."

I'm pretty sure we've been trading home and home scrimmages w/ Tech for a few years now. Per this old post, this is either the 4th or 5th straight year scrimmaging VaTech. I also seem to recall that JTIII used to scrimmage VaTech when he was head coach at Princeton, although Jon Soloman would be a better authority on that.

It might be older than JTIII's time, perhaps Greenburg made some connections here back in the few short years that VT played in the Big East. The series also proves that we didn't tamper with Gus Gilchrest's recruitment, even though a lot of Maryland fans (and some Hokie fans) wanted to argue it that way.

The VA Tech scout board often has a good recap of the scrimmage. There is a poster on there who seems well connected and gets leaked info. IIRC, they often control these scrimmages and try out different things, whereas the old exhibition games did nothing for us and turned into de facto layup lines.

It might be older than JTIII's time I don't think that's possible, since VaTech was in the Big East through 2003-04 ( link). I kinda doubt conference opponents would scrimmage.

I meant that the ties between the two schools were probably formed then, not between JTIII and VT/Greenburg while Thompson was at Princeton

I can't believe no one has even mentioned our scrimmage with VT this weekend at this point on Sunday. Did it happen? Anybody have any results? I can't believe how little traffic the board has had this year.
