Wow, that's too bad. He was a good one. From "Cool Hand Luke" to "The Hustler" to "The Sting" to "The Color of Money" etc... He was truly one of the best for 40 or 50 years.
RIP

Paul Newman was the man!
My mom is devastated this morning. I think he might have been the only celebrity in the world who she admired and respected.
God Bless, Butch. Non-stop auto races where you're headed.

A really great man. As a racing fan, his death is a huge loss for the sport.
There are a lot of rich hacks in racing who go out, buy a car, get in everybody's way, finish last, and call themselves racers. Paul Newman wasn't one of those - he had legitimate talent and a true passion for the sport. He was a great driver, a very involved and hugely successful team owner, and a great character to have around the paddock. Some of the greatest drivers in the world drove for his team and have very fond memories of when they drove for him, and his passing is being mourned in all forms of motor racing around the world.

One of my favorite lines:
Hole in the Wall Gang waiting for the return of Butch and Sundance -- decides Big Harvey should become the leader. Big Harv challenges Butch to a knife fight, tells Sundance, "If he loses Sundance, you're still welcome to stay." Sundance smiles, nods.
Butch says in an aside to Sundance, "If I lose, Kill Him!"
Other favorite line by Sundance to Butch, "You just keep thinkin' Butch, that's what your good at!"
A giant of a man, class act, actor of stage and screen, lived in CT not CA, terrific race car driver, better owner, Newman's Own popcorn, salad dressing etc. give $250 million to charity. He will be very sorely missed.

A testament to the man is shown from praise from everyone. There's no denying his acting ability or his driving ability for that matter. But I have little interest in Hollywood's political activists. Newman, however, managed to avoid much negativity. Sure, he and I didn't see eye-to-eye politically, but I had tremendous respect for the actor, the person and the man.
Somehow I don't think I will be remotely as interested when it becomes Alec Baldwin's turn.
RIP Luke/Fast Eddie etc...

In my effort to go back and watch the classics I've missed (i.e. mostly films before I was really able to watch movies), I rented The Sting just a couple of weeks ago. Great movie and what a pair of great actors. I think a couple of other Newman movies will be at the top of my list over the coming weeks.

Newman's Own is also a very successful, charitable company with very tasty products (especially the popcorn and salad dressings.)

KC, The Sting was one of my favorites. It just kept having twists. Everytime that you thought you had seen the last one and you had finally hit the "real" part, there was another setup. It was great.
JJL, I make my own salsa and whenever a friend has a party, I am asked to bring some. But for store bought salsa, the Newman's Own is a good alternative.
I make this dish that my kids love that is very simple. Mix a jar of Medium Newmans Own salsa with a can of refried beans. You have an excellent bean dip mix. Then spread out some good fresh corn chips on a cookie sheet. Spoon on the bean dip mixture and top with shredded cheddar cheese. Pop into the oven for about 10 minutes and then broil for another couple of minutes. Serve with sour cream, jalapenos and/or guacamole. It's a great vegetarian dish. If'n you want to pour some chile on top before you top with cheese, then you have a nice entre that goes over very well. BUt in that dish, I do prefer the Newman's Own Medium salsa.

That does sound good, especially at 4 in the evening. I have successfully grown ONE jalapeno on my deck this summer, I think I'll harvest it tonight and make this dish.

JJL, another nice twist is "lower" fat chicken nachos. You can get the refried beans as fat free and they really do taste the same in the dish. Then you can used the baked tostitos. They cost a little more, but taste good and hold up to the toppings. Then instead of chile, take boneless skinless chicken breasts. I like to pound them, as you would veal, to get them down to a uniform size and then cut them in strips and then in bite size pieces. Then put the chicken in a zip lock bag and add about 8 ounces of Mojo Criollo ("Spanish Barbecue Sauce). I use the Goya brand myself. Marinade the chicken for a couple of hours and then stirfry over high heat. It normally only takes about 4 or 5 minutes, depending on the size of the bites. Distribute the chicken over the chips and bean dip, then top with cheese. (Note: even though this is lower fat, I wouldn't suggest the fat free cheese. It's not good.) An alternative preparation is to marinade the entire pounded breast and then cook whole. After cooling, then shred or dice the chicken as you prefer.

You know, I don't think I have ever seen Slap Shot all the way through. I remember seeing parts of it at times, but I'm pretty sure I never sat down start to finish. That might be our movie for tomorrow evening. We do family movie night on Tuesday evenings.

Oh yeah. It's a family movie. Sure. Believe it or not, we are pretty liberal in what we allow our kids to watch. My youngest is 11, so obviously there are still some things that aren't appropriate for her, but the term "family movie night" doesn't mean a truly family-oriented movie, but rather that we all eat together and then watch the same movie. The chore is always to find a movie that no one has seen, but that is both entertaining and appropriate for all of us. When the kids were younger, it was always movies like Benji or other G-rated movies/Disney movies etc.... But we've branched out a lot now that the kids are older. Hell, my oldest can drive now ... egads!!!

How did this morph from a Paul newman thread into hifi dispensing recipes and parenting advice?

Slap Shot isn't really a great movie. It's more of a collection of great scenes and classic lines. Any hockey player who can't quote at least half the movie without help loses playing time.

I thought the dialogue in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was fantastic.
