It's like I can no longer trust Hoyatalk to tell me everything I need to know about the world. Just in time for Homecoming, the alley at 1206 Wisconsin Avenue has seen the return of a new old face: voices.washingtonpost.com/goingoutgurus/2008/09/new_on_wisconsin_avenue.html1. Sadly, it's owned by Rhino. 2. Even sadder, it purports to be a more upscale Rhino. 3. Who cares? It's a brand name legions of Hoya alums know and trust. Your thoughts?

For actual bands with talent, the Grog sucked. Both my current band and members of my past bands are happy to see the place go. Sure the owner let anyone play there, but he also refused to pay the bands the agreed price, the sound sucked, and don't even get me started about the bathrooms. I remember playing a gig there while was in high school in 1997. The other band we were openning for got so Editeded at the owner they all pull down their pants and Editeded right on the front of the club. Ahhhh....memories.
Champs was a dank hole...but who doesn't love dank? I went to Blue Gin once when it opened. It wanted to be like all those NYC style bars yet it was in an alley that smelled like pee....so I guess it really was like those NYC bars.

How do you have an article detailing the history of Champions (albeit briefly) and not mention the following two words:
Dino. Ciccarelli.
Champions was notorious for a number of things. But I'm pretty sure that's still #1.
(I'm sure lots of younger people remember Champions as an easy place to go and drink before you were 21; in my day, it was the most difficult bar to get into -- OK, the ONLY difficult bar to get into -- all thanks to Dino, Scott Stevens & friends.)

I assume he's talking about the incident referenced in the article: "One ironic touch, intentional or not: A framed Washington Capitals jersey, hanging on the wall near the bathroom. Champions, (in)famously, is where four Caps players were accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old woman at an end-of-season party in 1990. (A grand jury later declined to indict the players.)"

I will never return to Champs in its current form...it would be like Editeding on the grave of the former Champs...not until they bring back sketchy Lewis and Tony the bouncer, as well as the Pitcher and 4 shooters deal Thursday nights, will I return.

Oh, was it actually in the article? Sorry, I missed that, I just sort of scanned that piece. I stand corrected and my apologies to the WP.
It was a pretty big scandal at the time, despite the lack of indictments. And every player was shipped out within a year or so. And we couldn't drink at Champions anymore.

Buff, you can do better than that. "HiFi" and "teeth?" I'm not from Tennessee, thank you.

"During Monday Night Football, the "special" was Miller Lite bottles for $4 each, or a bucket of five for $18." Special? Jeez, even here in Utah you get can get a 36oz mug of what's on tap for $2.50 on Sundays at the local champs equivalent.
You're all correct - nothing like the old champs. Spent many a sunday afternoon there with the great Sunday Ticket.
