Here's the next round of those odd Microsoft ads with Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. Is there a point here?

Yeah, I saw the one in the shoe store. It was weird and had nothing to do with computers. I'm as befuddled as you, DFW.

If you've ever taken a marketing class, then you know that to the extent this campaign has befuddled people to the point that it's been written up in the WSJ, the NYT, and now on HoyaTalk, it's grabbed enough mindshare to be worth the money.
By the way, these ads apparently cost $300mm to make.
Double by the way, apparently there's a narrative here that will bring us back to how important Microsoft is to our lives.

"Paint it red, put it at eye level." That's about the extent of my formal marketing knowledge, so I can't really comment as to whether they're worth the money, just that they're weird and creepy. Another ad campaign that was weird and creepy? The Quizno's "furry rats" ads. I haven't had a sandwich there since. But I guess Bill Gates knows, when it comes to Microsoft, there are a lot fewer alternatives than there are to Quizno's grilled subs.

One ad campaign I'll never get is Tostito's "Tales from around the bowl". The last thing I want to contemplate when eating chips, salsa and other such snacks is what might be happening around the bowl.

I think they are pretty amusing.
Not really going to affect my buying habits, but I will say people in general are pretty impressionable.

Boz i hated those fuzzy rat commercials too but i'm pretty sure they proved the point because I think i remember reading that they were pretty effective. There's something about an annoyance factor about how up to a certain point of annoyance it makes you remember the product but after that point it turns people off. obviously sometimes marketers misgauge what level the annoyance of their commercial is at.

Well, I certainly remember the jingle, so if that is a measure of effectiveness, then job well done. However, the fuzzy rats (in my mind at least) crossed a very dangerous line......from "spokesmen" to "ingredients." I still can't walk by a Quizno's without feeling sick. (again, if this is the aim...kudos!)
