Memphis? Really? I just wouldn't have seen him fitting in well in Memphis. I think he chose well between Indiana and Memphis, as Indiana gives him an opportunity to be a team leader for a program that can't go anywhere but up.
That said, I have to imagine that the author overstated the Memphis connection. I suspect that his consideration of Memphis didn't extend any further than Sam Cassell's suggestion. I don't see why Calipari would even offer him.

What if Jeremiah overstated it? Wasn't Florida also in? I agree, sex, I somehow not see Calipari going after him with so much talent around. Jeremiah would've ended deeper on their depth chart or as a defensive specialist. Indiana was his best choice.

Memphis is looking to increase the number of possessions during which its offense dies one the side of the backboard.

Reading that article it seems JR didn't know much about any of the places he was thinking of transferring to. Weird. If you really wanted to get out of place because it was keeping you back from doing what you thought you were capable of doing, one would think it would be wise to learn as much as possible about the programs you were thinking of joining. Reading this article just makes the whole decision seem stranger. On the other hand, maybe it makes it all make more sense. Maybe the problem was he didn't know a whole lot about Georgetown and that's why he left.

looking back at this, that picture they have makes him look like a giant towering over the press core who is clamoring for his attention. very different from any picture taken of him during his time here

I don't find the destination strange. The choice to transfer at all? That's odd. But he went to be with a coach whom he has known for years and, apparently, quite well due to the Marquette connection. He lived near there, his dad is one of the all time great Marquette Warriors, he had a long relationship, and I am sure Crean -- desperate for players and experience, made him feel valued, important and wanted.
THat said, he's going to have a couple challenging years once he's eligible. Team will take a while to rebuild, and they are bringing in a lot of guards.

Saxa,
From what I've heard Rivers would have picked Crean in the first place but did not feel comfortable playing at Marquette where he would have had to do it in his Dad's considerable shadow.
That, coupled with the obvious decrease in PT that appeared to be on the horizon, makes the transfer make sense.
