I just heard the best response to one of Palin's snarky lines last night: "Mrs. Palin needs to be reminded that Jesus Christ was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor."
Also, I'm getting the feeling that Palin is not only revving up the conservative base, but the liberal base as well, just in the opposite direction. I have no conclusions about this, it's just an observation.

Tonight...John McCain as John McCain in Republican Theatre in the Round. ;D Unless, of course, the Skins/Giants game goes into overtime. Oh no, that would be absolutely terrible.... the first NFL game of the year would just bleed right into McCain's speech without any kind of break?!? The RNC will be just devastated if the local NBC affiliates don't get a chance to say anything to the 10+ million viewers watching the final minutes of the football game and they just send them live to Minneapolis in mid-speech

Don't have a link but heard Palin's speech was heard by 37.2M viewers, compared to 38.3M for Obama's speech - even though Palin's speech was carried by 6 networks while Obama's was carried by 10 networks. Among those not covering Palin's was Telemundo.

Negatives: No specifics (unsurprising), just jabs. It's easy to do this when your convention runs second. Also, might her personality overshadow Johnny? Seriously. I agree with you on the second point. I think there is a good chance of that actually, but I'm not convinced it's a negative yet. I repeat my earlier comments from the Olympic thread that I am not impressed with sports where a machine or animal does most, if not all, of the work. But really, can you get any more Republican than a guy who races snow machines? And hey, you learn something new every day. How many of us ignorant east coasters have been calling them "snowmobiles" our whole lives? See? We don't know everything. Tonight...John McCain as John McCain in Republican Theatre in the Round. ;D Actually, snowmobile is more common than snowmachine. Snowmachine is more common in Alaska. Actually, in Montana, we would go out "sledding" on the snowmobiles. And I've never done it competitively, but those big machines take some work to maneuver. It definitely can be a sports - especially when you're going 2,000 miles in the middle of Alaska.

For their sake, I hope they don't need a small-town mayor to rev them up when they have the great savior Obama to lead them.

Bando, I get the feeling that you are really trying to convince yourself that Palin isn't a good choice/didn't do a good job last night/isn't going to be good for the ticket/is, in fact going to be a plus for the dems etc....
Either way, you certainly aren't convincing any of us.

Well played to whoever said that. That is funny! Then again, Obama is campaigning for Jesus Christ, isn't he? So his former job does kind of make sense...... (ok, mine wasn't as funny, but I had to try)

I've heard Palin called Eliza Doolittle today. I think it's pretty funny.

Either way, you certainly aren't convincing any of us. I don't think I'm trying to say any of those things. All I'm saying is that she's a liar who has views I find abhorrent who's rhetorical style I find profoundly stupid. I'm not trying to convince you of jack squat.

Palin did a very good job last night. What I see here is a great degree of hypocrisy coming from the left. When Obama gave his acceptance speech, we ... yes WE -- as in both, those of us on the left as well as right -- recognized his eloquence and charisma, even if we disagreed with points here and there. But we all pretty much knew what we were getting in Obama. In Sarah Palin's case, she came in as much more of an unknown. But she impressed, and that has been virtually universally acknowledged by those from all political views. I watched much of the coverage from CNN and MSNBC as well as some from Fox, and the praise was virtually unanimous. In fact, the only real criticisms, if you can call it that, came in the form of warning that it's easy to look good in front of supportive constituents, but we still need to see how she does in an "unbiased" venue -- against Joe Biden in a debate for example. Point well taken. That being said, I come check out this thread and some of you schmucks toe the party line and totally discount the job Palin did last night. That is a bit too typical. Like Boz said, we aren't going to all agree on the specific points, but you have to give credit where credit is due. Lastly, to be scared of Palin sitting down with Putin, only begs the question of fear and trepidation with Obama sitting down with Putin. You wanna see some hypocrisy? I can show you some hypocrisy. "My children are off limits. Except for Cindy McCain, who can use my son as a prop." Are they just supposed the let the kid roll around on the floor and not let anyone hold him?

KC-- First of all, Bando already owned you on the hypocrisy front. A fine job as always by Mr. Stewart. Doesn't it suck when you say something and then say the total opposite a few months later. Those pesky TV cameras always seem to record what you say. But as far as the DNC set, I must agree. Columns always do make me think of emperors, and Greeks, and such. Oh, and this place: tinyurl.com/5jejen

Yes, yes, hypocrisy. It's always a pain in the ass. Especially when it comes from a talking head political strategist. Or maybe from the -- you know -- presidential candidate himself? (I think you know what this is, but it's about 2 minutes in.)

That 9/11 video that just played makes me feel dirty. It just may be the most jingoistic thing I've seen in a long time, and Lord knows this has been the presidency and the party of jingoism. All we need is another shot of a plane flying towards the screen, and if we can throw another image of the towers actually falling, that could be alright too.

Strummer, you clearly didn't learn the "lessons of 9/11."
Obama's campaign has now raised over $10 million since Palin's speech last night. A new Indiana poll has the race at 45/43 McCain in that state. The race will tighten up, but McCain needs his campaign to target its message. The race will come down to a handful of states (or up to 10).
Michigan Florida Ohio New Hampshire Colorado Virginia Pennsylvania Iowa --------- Nevada New Mexico New Hampshire
So far as I can tell, McCain's campaign hasn't identified a targeted message for these states other than to indicate that he is a maverick. The polls have McCain behind in at least 6 of those states, and Florida is really the only one that appears to be safe right now.

He's really speaking in front of a green screen? ? That is the dumbest backdrop possible. can't wait to see what colbert has to say about that. EDIT: okay, it's changing as he goes along. it was still weird to start with. also, i know it was just grass in a larger shot, but don't they realize what it will look like on TV?

This has been a decent speech so far. McCain clearly doesn't have the charisma of Obama, but I think he could really-- END THE WAR! END THE WAR!

How can he secure the country if he can't even secure the convention hall?
